The role of popular music is widely recognized in giving voice to radical political views, the plight of the oppressed, and the desire for social change. Avant-garde music, by contrast, is often thought to prioritize the pursuit of new technical or conceptual territory over issues of human and social concern. Yet throughout the activist 1960s, many avant-garde musicians were convinced that aesthetic experiment and social progressiveness made natural bedfellows. Intensely involved in the era's social and political upheavals, they often sought to reflect this engagement in their music. Yet how could avant-garde musicians make a meaningful contribution to social change if their music remained the preserve of a tiny, initiated clique? In answer, Sound Commitments, examines the encounter of avant-garde music and "the Sixties" across a range of genres, aesthetic positions and geographical locations. Through music for the concert hall, tape and electronic music, jazz and improvisation, participatory "events," performance art, and experimental popular music, the essays in this volume explore developments in the United States, France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, Japan and parts of the "Third World," delving into the deep richness of avant-garde musicians' response to the decade's defining cultural shifts. Featuring new archival research and/or interviews with significant figures of the period in each chapter, Sound Commitments will appeal to researchers and advanced students in the fields of post-war music, cultures of the 1960s, and the avant-garde, as well as to an informed general readership.

IBM WebSphere® eXtreme Scale provides a solution to scalability issues through caching and grid technology. It provides an enhanced quality of service in high performance computing environments. This IBM® Redbooks® publication introduces WebSphere eXtreme Scale and shows how to set up and use an eXtreme Scale environment. It begins with a discussion of the issues that would lead you to an eXtreme Scale solution. It then describes the architecture of eXtreme Scale to help you understand how the product works. It provides information about potential grid topologies, the APIs used by applications to access the grid, and application scenarios that show how to effectively use the grid. This book is intended for architects who want to implement WebSphere eXtreme Scale. The original edition of this book was based on WebSphere eXtreme Scale version 6.1. It was published in 2008 and described as a "User's Guide". This second edition updates the information based on WebSphere eXtreme Scale version 8.6, and covers key concepts and usage scenarios.

Rare events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods etc do not fortunately occur every day, but when they do, their effects are devastating. These days, such rare events are particularly important to understand to characterize the global warming and climate changes. In addition to natural catastrophes, rare events such as big financial crashes also play a significant role in economy. In the absence of predictive models, the best way forward is to analyse the statistics of these extreme events and draw conclusions from it about the probability of their occurrences. Extreme value statistics (EVS) and the statistics of records in a random sequence are examples of a truly interdisciplinary topic, spanning from statistics and mathematics on one side to physics of disordered systems on the other. They have tremendous importance and practical applications in a wide variety of fields, such as climate science, finance, spin-glasses, and random matrices. Statistics and mathematical literature have explored the subject of the classical theory of EVS. However, more recently, EVS started to play a very important role in statistical physics, in particular in disordered systems. This has led to a plethora of activities, both in the statistical physics and in the mathematics communities over the last few decades. This book develops the theory of rare events, both for the classical uncorrelated as well as for correlated sequences, in terms of simple models and examples. Statistics of Extremes and Records in Random Sequences is a pedagogical book with examples illustrating the basic tools and techniques that are essential to a student starting to work in this interesting and rapidly developing field.
