This practical treatment considers the vast economic and environmental importance of inorganic chemistry in applications from agriculture to water treatment to materials for electronics. Topics covered include: atmospheric pollution and its abatement; water conditioning; fertilizers; cement chemistry; extractive metallurgy; metallic corrosion; catalysts; fuel cells and advanced batter technology; pulp and paper production; explosives; superficial fluids; sol-gel science; materials for electronics; and superconductors.

Recent developments in physical geography have demonstrated the need for and advantages of an approach to physical environment based on energy and power as the rate of doing work. This energetic approach has been used in meteorology and climatology, in biogeography, soil geography, geomorphology and hydrology. The book contains six essays which demonstrate the importance of energetics in these major branches of physical geography and how it has gained prominence in the last few years. Because the approach is a feature of all branches of physical geography, energetics provides a unifying theme for the study of the physical environment. Although this book is not a proceedings volume, much of the material was presented at the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Bristol in September 1986.

The U.S. Army is in the process of destroying the nation's stockpile of aging chemical weapons stored at eight locations in the continental United States and on Johnston Atoll in the Pacific. Originally, incineration was chosen for the destruction of these stores, but this method has met with public opposition, and Congress directed the Army to develop alternative technologies for destroying the stockpiles in Pueblo, CO and Richmond, KY. To assist the Army in this process, the NRC was asked to evaluate the engineering design study of the three Blue Grass candidates. This book presents an analysis of various issues pertaining to the proposed engineering design package for the Blue Grass facility.
