This book, built on the latest internationally recognized classification system to which the volume editor contributed, offers a unique and comprehensive reference guide to the clinical presentation, characteristics and proper treatment of the wide spectrum of congenital malformations of the inner ear (IEM). IEMs are common, accounting for roughly 20% of congenital hearing loss cases, and can be difficult to manage: 8 groups are identified, which are completely different from each other. With a wealth of color figures and extra videos, the book provides an in-depth description of all the relevant aspects: from histopathology assessment, to preoperative evaluation, genetics, different surgical and non-surgical options, and outcomes. The results from two international Consensus Pediatric Auditory Brainstem Implantation Meetings are also included. Written by leading experts in the field, this volume will be an invaluable and multidisciplinary tool for otolaryngologists, audiologists and radiologists, while also benefiting scientists dealing with genetics, and neurosurgeons dealing with brainstem implants.

The purpose of this book is to contribute to basic and clinical medical research on cochlear implants for inner ear malformation and cochlear nerve deficiency. Cochlear implantation for children is performed worldwide, and the outcomes concerning speech and hearing acquisition are epoch-making. However, there are some difficulties associated with applying this operative treatment to patients who have complicated inner ear malformations or cochlear nerve deficiencies that have slowed the development of their speech, hearing, and/or sense of balance. The first part of the book outlines the fundamental aspects of inner ear maldevelopment to facilitate readers’ understanding of cochlear implantation from the point of view of embryology, morphology, and genetics. In turn, the second part describes current clinical cases and presents successful clinical reports. The book offers a primary resource for otolaryngologists, neurologists, and pediatricians with an interest in this field.

This book presents standard imaging techniques, basic anatomy and an approach to common pathology encountered in temporal bone imaging. Intended as a survival guide for residents and general radiologists, it covers all topics comprehensively, and provides intuitive point-by-point summaries, similar to those of popular radiology reference sites, for easy comprehension at a glance. The book also offers guidance on the pertinent points that need to be included in a report and how to answer basic questions that are likely to be asked by the referring clinician or supervising radiologist. This book will be a valuable resource for general radiologists, radiology residents, ENT residents, otology surgeons and anyone involved in the occasional temporal bone study.

Inner Ear Malformations usually have intricate and overlapping imaging findings, making evaluation of such a case difficult. Various authors have attempted to classify this complex group of anomalies, but the most prevalent and widely accepted classification was proposed by Sennaroglu et al, year. Sennaroglu, after extensively researching on the subject, proposed his own classification. The classification is based on embryogenesis of the inner ear and closely correlated with the most effective treatment. u2022tThe (CHN) most comprehensive Sennaroglu classification, based on embryogenesis has been used, dividing the malformations to Labyrinthine Aplasia, Rudimentary Otocyst, Common Cavity Morphology, Cochlear Aplasia with/without Dilated Vestibule, Cochlear hypoplasia (further 4 types), Incomplete Partition (further 4 types), Enlarged vestibular aqueduct and Cochlear Aperture Abnormalities. Lateral semicircular canal abnormalities are also seen, of which usually the lateral SCC in seen in isolation as it is last to be formed.Except for the most severe anomalies, (total aplasia of cochlea or 8th nerve) cochlear implant is the only way for some of these children to lead a meaningful life. However, such a surgical procedure not only requires exquisite expertise to perform but is also associated with post-operative complications like CSF gusher and infections.Cross sectional imaging assessment is pre-requisite for pre-operative evaluation of a case of pediatric SNHL case to determine suitability for cochlear implantation.

This open access book offers an essential overview of brain, head and neck, and spine imaging. Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by both clinical and technological developments. Written by leading international experts and teachers, the chapters are disease-oriented and cover all relevant imaging modalities, with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. The book also includes a synopsis of pediatric imaging. IDKD books are rewritten (not merely updated) every four years, which means they offer a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in imaging. The book is clearly structured and features learning objectives, abstracts, subheadings, tables and take-home points, supported by design elements to help readers navigate the text. It will particularly appeal to general radiologists, radiology residents, and interventional radiologists who want to update their diagnostic expertise, as well as clinicians from other specialties who are interested in imaging for their patient care.

The common cavity deformity (CCD) of the inner ear is characterized by cochlea and vestibule forming a single cavity. It indicates cochlear implantation (CI) and about 15% to 25% of inner ear malformation. However, complications such as facial nerve injury, penetration of the electrode array into the internal auditory canal (IAC) and electrode displacement are common, leading to unsatisfied outcomes. This book describes the embryology of CCD, preoperative auditory, balance and vestibular evaluation, and electrophysiology and radiology aspect for CCD. In addition, the surgical technique and CI outcomes will be focused. The electrode array design is also a highlight for CCD surgery, and will be discussed in details. Last but not least, the balance and vestibular function research of CCD patients before and after surgery is also thoroughly reviewed. It will be a good reference for otologist and practitioners in related field to understand more about CCD.
