"This research paper provides background material for the San Francisco Department of City Planning in updating the "Commerce and Industry" element of the City Master Plan...This project was contracted throug the pilot program Action Research and Resource Cneter (ARRC) of San Francisco State University which provides students with opportunities to do research for government agencies and community organizations...The target area of this study is the Potrero Hill (PH) industrial zones. The first section of this paper indentifies and maps various sub-districts within the PH industrial zoned property and maps and lists available industrial real estate and industrial trends. The second section focuses on the American Industrial Center (AIC) also known as the former American Can Company which is located between Third, Illinois, 22nd and 23rd Streets and proposes re-use as an "appropriate technology center." An economic survey is made of four appropriate technology industries with potential for location in the AICS: solar heating and cooling systems, insulation contracting, paper recycling and metal recycling. The economic analysis summarizes the feasibility of industries intervieweed in the survey to locate in the AIC and proposes methodologies to implement such a plan."-- pages 1-2.
