An impulsive control system contains a plant (usually a continuous-time dynamical system) and a control law. In the past ten years, many developments have occurred regarding control systems with impulsive effects or control systems via impulsive control laws. Impulsive effects can take place in plant dynamics or be introduced through control laws. This book studies the two main types of control systems. First are the controlling impulsive systems, in which the plant itself is formed by impulsive differential equations, so the control law will be either continuous or impulsive. In engineering, the impulsive control serves as a crucial method for making nanodevices. The second control systems are impulsively controlled dynamical systems, where the plant has no impulsive effects, though the control laws introduce impulsive effects to the plant's state variables. The engineering application here is within non-linear communications. This book offers mathematicians real applications of equations, engineers a toolbox and math theory for control problems, and physicists a new framework of modelling impulsive effects.

This book develops a general analysis and synthesis framework for impulsive and hybrid dynamical systems. Such a framework is imperative for modern complex engineering systems that involve interacting continuous-time and discrete-time dynamics with multiple modes of operation that place stringent demands on controller design and require implementation of increasing complexity--whether advanced high-performance tactical fighter aircraft and space vehicles, variable-cycle gas turbine engines, or air and ground transportation systems. Impulsive and Hybrid Dynamical Systems goes beyond similar treatments by developing invariant set stability theorems, partial stability, Lagrange stability, boundedness, ultimate boundedness, dissipativity theory, vector dissipativity theory, energy-based hybrid control, optimal control, disturbance rejection control, and robust control for nonlinear impulsive and hybrid dynamical systems. A major contribution to mathematical system theory and control system theory, this book is written from a system-theoretic point of view with the highest standards of exposition and rigor. It is intended for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners of engineering and applied mathematics as well as computer scientists, physicists, and other scientists who seek a fundamental understanding of the rich dynamical behavior of impulsive and hybrid dynamical systems.

The concept of impulsive control and its mathematical foundation called - pulsive di?erential equations,or di?erential equations with impulse e?ects,or di?erential equations with discontinuous righthand sides have a long history. In fact, in mechanical systems impulsive phenomena had been studied for a long time under di?erent names such as: mechanical systems with impacts. The study of impulsive control systems (control systems with impulse e?ects) has also a long history that can be traced back to the beginning of modern control theory. Many impulsive control methods were successfully developed under the framework of optimal control and were occasionally called impulse control. The so called impulse control is not exactly the impulsive control as will be de?ned in this book. The reader should not mixup these two kinds of control methods though in many papers they were treated as the same. - cently, there is a tendency of integrating impulsive control into hybrid control systems. However, this e?ort does not have much help to the development of impulsive control theory because impulsive systems can only be studied by the very mathematical tool based on impulsive di?erential equations. The e?ort to invent a very general framework of hybrid control system for stu- ing impulsive control and other hybrid control problems will contribute no essential knowledge to impulsive control.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONSMOOTH ANALYSIS AND GEOMETRIC METHODS IN DETERMINISTIC OPTIMAL CONTROL is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The purpose of this workshop was to concentrate on powerful mathematical techniques that have been de veloped in deterministic optimal control theory after the basic foundations of the theory (existence theorems, maximum principle, dynamic program ming, sufficiency theorems for sufficiently smooth fields of extremals) were laid out in the 1960s. These advanced techniques make it possible to derive much more detailed information about the structure of solutions than could be obtained in the past, and they support new algorithmic approaches to the calculation of such solutions. We thank Boris S. Mordukhovich and Hector J. Sussmann for organiz ing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this oppor tunity to thank the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. v PREFACE This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Nonsmooth Analysis and Geometric Methods in Deterministic Optimal Control held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications on February 8-17, 1993 during a special year devoted to Control Theory and its Applications. Impulsive Control in Continuous and Discrete-Continuous Systems is an up-to-date introduction to the theory of impulsive control in nonlinear systems. This is a new branch of the Optimal Control Theory, which is tightly connected to the Theory of Hybrid Systems. The text introduces the reader to the interesting area of optimal control problems with discontinuous solutions, discussing the application of a new and effective method of discontinuous time-transformation. With a large number of examples, illustrations, and applied problems arising in the area of observation control, this book is excellent as a textbook or reference for a senior or graduate-level course on the subject, as well as a reference for researchers in related fields.

This book systematically presents the most recent progress in stability and control of impulsive systems with delays. Impulsive systems have recently attracted continued high research interests because they provide a natural framework for mathematical modeling of many real-world processes. It focuses not only on impulsive delayed systems, but also impulsive systems with delayed impulses and impulsive systems with event-triggered mechanism, including their Lyapunov stability, finite-time stability and input-to-state stability synthesis. Special attention is paid to the bilateral effects of the delayed impulses, where comprehensive stability properties are discussed in the framework of time-dependent and state-dependent delays. New original work with event-triggered impulsive control and its applications in multi-agent systems and collective dynamics are also provided. This book will be of use to specialists who are interested in the theory of impulsive differential equations and impulsive control theory, as well as high technology specialists who work in the fields of complex networks and applied mathematics. Also, instructors teaching graduate courses and graduate students will find this book a valuable source of nonlinear system theory.
