I'll Take Animals (You Can Have People), despite its title, is not meant to be antipeople (or anti-anything for that matter); it's just pro-animals. Animals (with rare exceptions--alligators, say--and perhaps, one cat) are so much easier to live with. The animals who inhabit this book are presented in little vignettes held together by a slender autobiographical thread. Dogs, cats, and birds hog most of the space, but other animals get their turn as well. A strong-willed bunny, in particular, hops through a fair number of pages. A possum, a squirrel, an airborne Russian brown bear, and a racehorse (rider attached, more or less) all make an appearance. Even a few bugs manage to crawl through these pages. Pierre is clearly the king of the canine (or any) hill, the very best that poodledom had to offer. No kennel club has ever seen his likes. He had the pedigree all right, but pom-poms and all that hype were not for him. Family dog is what he wanted to be, and family dog he was. Brownie lacked the papers (mutts don't get them), but he was a class act just the same. As for Nap, He may or may not have had a pedigree. I don't know. All I know is that he was a German shepherd, and he raised me. The other canines--Poo, Loopy, Wally, et al.--never formally became part of our family; we loved them nonetheless. The felines ranged from Smiley (worst) to Charlie and Coco (tied for best). Little Toot had the potential to make it a triple tie, but we only knew her for a few days. Our avians included ducks in Switzerland and Orange County, an aggressive hummingbird (aren't they all?) and two pairs of doves and their broods. To those who see anthropomorphism in every line, move on, but if you are humble enough to share the possibility of human emotions in other species, read and enjoy.

An honest and deeply moving debut memoir about a young woman’s battle with depression and how her dog saved her life A New York Times Bestseller “Dog Medicine simply has to be your next must-read.” —Cheryl Strayed At twenty-two, Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie’s incoherent phone call, her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home. Haunted by troubling childhood memories, Julie continued to sink into suicidal depression. Psychiatrists, therapists, and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a Golden Retriever puppy she named Bunker. Dog Medicine captures the anguish of depression, the slow path to recovery, the beauty of forgiveness, and the astonishing ways animals can help heal even the most broken hearts and minds.

Evil had to be defeated and he had a responsibility to help. Now it was too late to do anything but spend the lives of millions of young men to defeat this new Dark Age. The mountains were witness to Sidney's determination to stand tall against the darkness. "Those mountains have always been there. They can be my memorial if I don't come back." This family story spans five generations through the Indian Wars of the Dakotas and Montana, both world wars and Vietnam. It speaks to the heartbreak war often brings when young men roll the dice to answer the call of duty. The story weaves tales of separation, unrequited love, intense romance and devotion to promises and honour. At it's heart, this is an anti war story that illustrates how family can be devastated by conflict while also speaking to the healing of spirit that passes from one generation to the next.

Most gentlemen wait to get married because they want time to enjoy being a bachelor before taking on the responsibilities of a married gentleman. Baldwin Darby, the Duke of Edmondstone, isn’t one of them. The life of a rogue never appealed to him. He’s wanted nothing more than to fall in love and live a quiet and uneventful life ever since he could remember. It wasn’t by choice that he hasn’t married yet. He’s just not very comfortable around ladies, which makes the marriage mart difficult for him. So when his acquaintance mentions a sister at his country estate who is ready for marriage, he jumps at the chance for an arranged marriage. He’s been told she is extremely shy and that it takes her time to open up around strangers, so he might find her a bit strange when he initially meets her. But this doesn’t bother him. He’s a patient gentleman and can give her time to get used to him. What he doesn’t count on, however, is just how strange everything is when he gets to the country estate. She refuses to leave her section of the manor, she has to go to bed before it’s dark, and she has an unusual fascination for monsters. Despite all of that, she is beautiful and possesses a sweet temperament. He wishes he could figure out a way to help her embrace a normal life. If he keeps pressing for her to have a normal life, he just might get his wish. But nothing will prepare him for the truth. *This is loosely based off the Rapunzel fairy tale.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, "Animal's People" is by turns a profane, scathingly funny, and piercingly honest tale of a boy so badly damaged by the poisons released during a chemical plant leak that he walks on all fours.
