Straight from the library--the strange and bizarre, ready to be checked out! From a patron's missing wetsuit to the scent of crab cakes wafting through the stacks, I Work at a Public Library showcases the oddities that have come across Gina Sheridan's circulation desk. Throughout these pages, she catalogs her encounters with local eccentrics as well as the questions that plague her, such as, "What is the standard length of eyebrow hairs?" Whether she's helping someone scan his face onto an online dating site or explaining why the library doesn't have any dragon autobiographies, Sheridan's bizarre tales prove that she's truly seen it all. Stacked high with hundreds of strange-but-true stories, I Work at a Public Library celebrates librarians and the unforgettable patrons that roam the stacks every day.

The American Public Library Handbook is the first reference work to focus on all aspects of the American public library experience, providing a topical perspective through comprehensive essays and biographical information on important public librarians. Based upon the author's own notes and extensive experience, as well as library periodicals, library reference books, monographs, textbooks, Internet sources, and correspondence with individual libraries, this book comprises nearly 1,000 entries addressing all aspects of public library service. Each topical essay considers terminology of the area covered, its historical context, and current concerns and issues. Biographies highlight the philosophical perspective of the individuals covered, while entries on specific libraries present timely data and interesting facts about each facility. This unique handbook also offers up-to-date statistics, historical highlights, and information about programs and events of individual libraries.

There is No Such Thing as a Typical Librarian pulls back the curtain on the day to day operation of working in both an academic and public library. It is a love letter to the library profession based on the personal experiences of Steve Antonuccio, who worked in libraries for over 30 years. Mr. Antonuccio began his career as a media specialist for Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs in 1982. He spent 20 years at the Pikes Peak Library District creating and operating the Library Channel as the manager of the educational cable access studio. The Library Channel reached 80,000 households in Colorado Springs. He produced over 100 video portraits and documentaries and was nominated for two Heartland Emmy awards and two national Cable Ace awards for his programming. After retiring from the Pikes Peak Library District in 2008, Steve went to work for the Pueblo City-County Library District for six years as a branch manager. He worked on the front lines of public service and tells both poignant and humorous stories about working with the public. Steve attained a Masters in Library Science from Emporia State in 1992. This book has a foreword written by Camila Alire, former 2009-2010 President of the American Library Association.
