From the Lake of Reflected Fragrance to the Pavilion for Washing Away Thoughts to the Isle of Alighting Geese, this gorgeously illustrated volume explores the Huntington's Chinese Garden—Liu Fang Yuan, or the Garden of Flowing Fragrance—one of the largest such gardens outside China. With the first phase of construction completed, the garden opened to visitors in early 2008. It resembles those created in seventeenth-century Suzhou, offering awe-inspiring views and architecture and evoking an era when scholars sought quiet, intimate gardens in which to retreat, write poetry, and practice calligraphy, among many other pursuits. The contributors to Another World Lies Beyond discuss the challenges of constructing the garden in Southern California as well as the cultural traditions and aesthetics of Chinese garden design, especially the ways in which the plants and structures engage the imagination of visitors. Inscribed poetic couplets, literary allusions, botanical motifs, and evocative names for structures reveal layers of symbolism for exploration and interpretation. The volume's final essay describes how plants that originated in China—such as the chrysanthemum, the plum, and the camellia—have shaped that country's ancient botanical heritage and have enriched the gardens of both East and West.

This edition has 65 new images, making a total of 500. The original configurations were altered so that there is only one species per plate. The text is a revision of the Ornithological Biography, rearranged according to Audubon's Synopsis of the Birds of North America (1839).

Made in L.A. 2020: a version brings together an intergenerational and interdisciplinary mix of artists, each of whom is contributing to L.A.'s vibrant art scene. Since its inception in 2012, the Hammer Museum's Made in L.A. biennial has brought together local artists from a wide range of discipline. Under the direction of co-curators Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler, the 2020 iteration will be no exception. The Hammer's Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, who has previously served with Performa and The Kitchen in New York, will assist in the organization of the 2020 biennial in the role of assistant curator for performance. Drawing inspiration from historical artist magazines, this book is not documentation of the artists' work, but rather serves as an additional venue for the exhibition. It includes images of the artists' studios, art made specifically for the pages of the book, as well as essays and conversations between artists and curators that weave together the conceptual through-lines of the show. An introduction to the William Blake Collection in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, California.

This volume of essays was produced in conjunction with a full-size facsimile of the Huntington's Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The introductory essays and appendices, prepared by Woodward (Huntington Library) and Stevens (Graduate School, City University of New York), explain the significance and construction of the facsimile and summarize the conservation work done on the manuscript as the facsimile was in the making. Essays by fourteen internationally known British, American, and Japanese scholars discuss the physical construction of the Ellesmere manuscript, its decoration and illumination, its text and language, the ways in which the arrangement and presentation of the manuscript affect the meaning of the text, the order of tales in the manuscript, the relationship of this work to contemporary literary efforts and practices, and the provenance of the manuscript before its acquisition by Henry E. Huntington in 1917. As a reflection of the significance of this manuscript in an increasingly English-reading world, the volume concludes with a survey of Chaucer studies in Japan. There are fifty-seven illustrations in the book, supplemented by a separate color foldout that reproduces all of the famous Ellesmere illustrations of the pilgrim-storytellers.
