Best china and glass must be put out, plate fished out of its green baize bed and rubbed up, carpets uncovered, and a hundred things done, of the nature of which it were useless to inquire--all involving an amount of ordering, counter-ordering, and general worry, that makes one's hair stand on end; and all for what?--for one or two wretched people who, on a similar emergency, go through the same exhausting process, and who therefore know exactly how much to be deceived by it; for it is this idea which causes all this rubbing up and unpinning. It is not to give pleasure to your guest--rather the contrary, if anything, it is carefully calculated to make them feel small--the satisfaction, if satisfaction there be, is all for yourself, to make your guest think you "stylish"--a horrid word, doubtless, and a vulgar; but, if horrid, vulgar things have to be mentioned, what can one do? It really is a comfort to think that such people cannot carry out their nasty notions without extreme discomfort and inconvenience to themselves--a sort of moral Nemesis; but still, while rejoicing in the sufferings of the hosts, the servants and guests are fair subjects of commiseration. In regard to these more flagrant offenders, it were useless to do more than shrug our shoulders and pass on; it would be but a bad example in practical economy to spend time and trouble from which little or no return can be hoped.
