Inner-city Sydney was the epicenter of gay life in the Southern hemisphere in the 1970s and early 1980s. Gay men moved from across Australasia to find liberation in the city’s vibrant community networks; and when HIV and AIDS devastated those networks, they grieved, suffered, and survived in ways that have often been left out of the historical record. This book excavates the intimate lives and memories of HIV-positive gay men in Sydney, focusing on the critical years between 1982 and 1996, when HIV went from being a terrifying unidentified disease to a chronic condition that could be managed with antiretroviral medication. Using oral histories and archival research, Cheryl Ware offers a sensitive, moving exploration of how HIV-positive gay men navigated issues around disclosure, health, sex, grief, death, and survival. HIV Survivors in Sydney reveals how gay men dealt with the virus both within and outside of support networks, and how they remember these experiences nearly three decades later.

Phil Shipton and Roy Wilkins came together through The Ankali Project. A Sydney based project that provides emotional and social support to people living with HIV. It is from here that The HIV Book Project was born. Our vision is to produce an art and cultural project that reveals a social history documenting the diverse range of people living with HIV/AIDS over the last 35 years within Sydney, and nearby regions of NSW. The storytelling is achieved through reflective interviews and photographic portraiture in meaningful locales to each individual.The project is a peer led initiative; conceived, created, coordinated, photographed and documented by HIV positive people to engage with a range of diverse audiences and the wider community. We have been auspiced within Positive Life NSW, the voice of people living with HIV since 1988.The 40th anniversary of both the World AIDS Day commemoration and the Mardi Gras parade occurs in 2018, we consider it timely to produce an artistic representation of this social history highlighting the significant changes that have occurred since the early days of HIV, its impact on our communities, and where we are today. HIV has changed significantly over the last 30 years, from an acute infection to a chronic condition. With improved anti-retroviral treatments, we have seen our friends, and our lovers living with HIV move out of the hospital wards, back into society, relationships, full time employment, and life, albeit with ongoing stigma and discrimination. It is this journey of change that the HIV Book Project wishes to document. These changes have given many HIV positive people the confidence to become more visible within their communities and share their experience of what it is like to live with HIV. Living longer with HIV has also meant that many people are now ageing with HIV, something they never expected to do. We wish to document and highlight these exciting changes for our community by providing a vehicle that allows positive people to stand up, find their voice and create awareness in the wider community.

This book is about community activism around HIV/AIDS in Australia. It looks at the role that the gay community played in the social, medical and political response to the virus. Drawing conclusions about the cultural impact of social movements, the author argues that AIDS activism contributed to improving social attitudes towards gay men and lesbians in Australia, while also challenging some entrenched cultural patterns of the Australian medical system, allowing greater scope for non-medical intervention into the domain of health and illness. The book documents an important chapter in the history of public health in Australia and explores how HIV/AIDS came to be a defining issue in the history of gay and lesbian rights in Australia.

Drawing on activist campaign literature and materials, broadcast media, and new oral history interviews, Severs reconstructs and discusses the overlooked world of radical AIDS activism in England. This book provides one of the first detailed histories of the radical HIV/AIDS movement in England, following ACT UP's travels from New York to London via prominent queer intellectuals, and reconstructing the vibrant theatrical campaigns staged by ACT UP groups across England. Radical Acts explores expressions of activism that were far more common than demonstrations and marches. Manifestations of a political commitment to ameliorating the injustices facing people living with HIV permeated most aspects of everyday life. These forms of 'everyday activism' played out in workplaces, universities and church halls across England, as well as through networks that stretched across Europe and North America. This book breaks new ground by studying the radical alongside the everyday, presenting a diverse constellation of activist responses to the epidemic.

Volume III provides in-depth analyses of specific times and places in the history of world sexualities, to investigate more closely the lived experience of individuals and groups to reveal the diversity of human sexualities. Comprising twenty-five chapters, this volume covers ancient Athens, Rome, and Constantinople; eighth- and ninth-century Chang'an, ninth- and tenth-century Baghdad, and tenth- through twelfth-century Kyoto; fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Iceland and Florence; sixteenth-century Tenochtitlan, Istanbul, and Geneva; eighteenth-century Edo, Paris, and Philadelphia; nineteenth-century Cairo, London, and Manila; late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Lagos, Bombay, Buenos Aires, and Berlin, and twentieth-century Sydney, Toronto, Shanghai, and Rio de Janeiro. In this innovative collection, contributors unmask international crimefighters, track superheroes outside of the comic book page, and explore heroes whose secret identities are not cisgender men. Superheroes Beyond responds to the growing interest in understanding the unique appeal of superheroes by reveling in the diversity of this heroic type. Superheroes Beyond explores the complexity and cultural reach of the superhero in three sections. The first, “Beyond Men of Steel,” examines how the archetype has moved beyond simply recapitulating the “man of steel” figure to include broader representations of race, gender, sexuality, and ableness. The second section, “Beyond Comic Books,” discusses how the superhero has become a transmedia phenomenon, moving from comic books to toys to cinema screens and beyond.
