Abstract: This Sourcebook aims to support efforts by countries to strengthen the role of the education sector in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. It was developed in response to numerous requests for a simple forum to help countries share their practical experiences of designing and implementing programs that are targeted at school-age children. The Sourcebook seeks to fulfill this role by providing concise summaries of programs, using a standard format that highlights the main elements of the programs and makes it easier to compare the programs with each other. A Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, 2nd Edition documents 13 education based HIV/AIDS prevention programs targeting children and youth from 7 sub-Saharan African countries. It is sponsored by UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA, DFID, USAID, Ireland Aid and the World Bank. The Sourcebook represents the work of many contributors, and was developed by the Partnership for Child Development with the World Bank.

More than three decades after the identification of the virus, HIV continues to affect millions of people worldwide. Much progress has been made and infection rates are down in a number of countries. From the beginning the education sector has played a central role in responding to HIV, though its role and the contribution of school-based HIV education has been the subject of much debate. This book explores the major debates and provides an overview of how the role of the education sector and approaches to HIV education have evolved, what has been learned, emerging challenges and opportunities, and proposes a way forward for the education sector to contribute to the prevention of new infections, treatment and care, and reduce stigma and discrimination. The Education on the Move series seeks to bring research knowledge produced by various academic disciplines and within various organizations to those who can shape educational policies and drive reforms.

An in-depth, accessible study of school based intervention programs that affect girls in Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe, as a representative subset of Sub Saharan Africa. This book indulges in the reasons why HIV goals are lagging behind particularly with adolescent girls and young women. It tackles issues such as access to quality HIV education and delivery methods used by teachers. It discusses culture and religion as barriers to HIV education. It concludes by suggesting ways for a multi-sectoral approach and transformational change in order to reach the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the 90-90-90 targets.

As children grow up, they discover taboo areas in their environment and in life. They are in need of advice to prevent them from placing themselves in risky situations. The primary preventive approach to a life skills programme on HIV/AIDS and sex education, called “Child Mind Project”, can be seen as such an initiative.

This report sets out to describe current policy and practice related to health and AIDS education in primary and secondary schools in Africa and Asia. It focuses on: the health and education context, and the priority attached HIV/AIDS; curriculum content; teaching methods; teacher preparation and the concerns of young people with regards to health generally and AIDS specifically. The report draws on published and unpublished literature as well as empirical work in four countries: Pakistan, India, Uganda, and Ghana. The empirical work combines key informant and documentary analysis of stated policy and practice, with detailed work carried out in selected schools in each of the countries. The schools data pay particular attention to the worries and concerns of young people. As such, it may provide a useful starting point for discussion on developing "student centered" health education curricula. (Contains 43 references.) (Author/JDM)
