Excerpt from In the King's Service: A History of Woman's Missionary Union, 1886-1986; First Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina From the very beginning of First Baptist Church the women of the church had always sought to attend to the needs of the less fortunate in the city of Raleigh. There were two organizations which we know about: the Female Mite Society and the Woman's Working Society, which preceded the original organization of Woman's Missionary Union. In the period between 1827 and 1838, the Woman's Working Society was organized under the leadership of Mrs. Sarah Stone, the widow of David Stone, a banker, and the only son of Governor David Stone. It was at this time that women began to assume a more prominent place in the church. Mrs. Stone later became Mrs. Alfred Williams and continued in a leadership role.
