The boyhood and earlier years of Mr. Eason were spent with his father upon the farm, where he participated in the unpoeb'c activities of rural life, and where hard physical toil brought brawn to his hands, and where the harvest sun smote his cheek and printed thereon its swarthy bloom. He now had advanced to his twenty-first year, but although pursuing the healthful routine of the farm, he had not been neglectful of books, mental discipline and study. Having availed himself of such educational advantages as the times afforded, and by processes of self-tutelage such as are known only to the instructor of himself, he next entered upon the worthy career of teacher of the district school. Hope told him a flattering tale, and whispered, "Persevere, be faithful, true to friends, steadfast in principle, unbending in integrity, and success will crown your efforts." The record proves that hope held out no treacherous beacon. For a period of five years continuously he prosecuted the vocation of teacher, achieving local reputation as an adept in that profession. These five years of experience as public instructor were appreciated by the parents of the youth whose culture and expansion he sought, but they were none the less years of training and development to him. Five years in the school-room has its equivalent only in two years in the university. If he was the educator of the children, he was likewise his own pupil.
