We set out through a thick forest, and traveled a small Indian trail, our way being obstructed by logs and swamps. This morning our pack horse got scared, and ran off with our camp equipage; but we soon caught him, and but little damage was done. Our conversation this day, was varied, comprehending many topics. One, however, seemed to interest my companions; which was, the providence of God over the world. There were many things that seemed dark to their minds, and which they could not solve. For instance, we were passing through a great wind-fall, where every tree was either blown down or broken off. Now, what purpose God could have in sending so strong a wind into this wilderness, or what purpose it was designed to serve, was to them a mystery. I said, " My brothers, if you knew all God's reasons why he does so, you would be as wise as God himself. This we cannotknow now, but we may know hereafter." "But has God the right to break down all these trees, when he pleases I" " 0 yes, he has the right, for he made them; and he has the right to kill and make alive."
