Excerpt from Coffee: Production, Trade, and Consumption by Countries The different co ee producing countiies can be classified into four general classes as regards increase or decrease in production: (1) Brazil, Where production has increased very rapidly and has more than kept pace With the increase in consumption; (2) Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, the Guianas, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and the West Indies, where the production has gradually increased until recently, but in late years has remained stationary owing to the limited area suitable for coffee culture and to the great increase in production in Brazil; (3) Africa and Arabia, where the area and modes Of cultivation and transportation are limited, and where production, having passed through various phases, now remains nearly stationary; (4) Asia (excepting Arabia), which includes the Dutch and British East Indies, and the Philippine Islands, where co mee was early grown. And at an early date controlled the world's markets, but which can not at the present time compete with that grown in newer territories and in late years Shows a marked decrease in production.
