In Jan., 1862, it was engaged in the reconnaissance in the rear of Columbus, Ky., under Gen. Grant. At Fort Donelson, in connection with the 17th and 49th Ill., it charged the enemy's works, but was repulsed with a severe loss, and was under fire during the following day, losing a few men wounded. During the third and last day of the battle it was fiercely engaged and lost 40 in killed and wounded. It was engaged in the battle of Shiloh, bearing its full part and losing over half of its men in killed and wounded. It was in the siege of Corinth in May, 1862, in June was ordered to Bethel as garrison of that post and remained there until 1863. Whether it was total ineptness on the part of its officers, or as some have speculated, the bigotry of the men who refused to serve alongside black soldiers, the Illinois 128th Infantry Regiment was a complete failure. After being formed in the fall of 1862, it lost 82% of its men in less than 5 months to desertion. When the unit was disbanded some of the men went on to serve in other units, principally the Illinois 9th Infantry Regiment. The Illinois 61st Infantry Regiment did not follow the typical path through the war. They did, however, see severe service in a number of battles starting with Shiloh. They had direct conflicts with Gen. Forrest in December of 1862, and again in December, 1864. Many of the other encounters across Tennessee, upper Mississippi, and northern Alabama may have also engaged his forces. The 61st ended the war in Nashville, Tennessee, arriving after the big battle in December, 1864 and serving garrison duty until being mustered out in September, 1865. A firsthand account of the 61st entitled "The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War" by Leander Stillwell is available. This book ranks as one of the best Civil War histories.
