Contains history and discription of Hierschau (or Girshau, aka Primernoe), Tavrida, Russia; now Vladivka, Chernihivka, Zaporiz︠h︡z︠h︡i︠a︡, Ukraine. Hierschau was part of a group of villages collectively known as the Molotschna Colony.

Jacob (Baerg) Berg was born in 1777 possibly in Holland. He married twice and had 17 children. Eventually the family ended up in Russia before several children moved to the United States and Canada. Information on many of the descendants who live in Canada and through out the United States is given in this volume.

This compilation resulted in a two-volume set including biographical sketches, poems, and narrative accounts. Mennonite Martyrs now provides English-speaking people the opportunity to gain inspiration and make commitments because of the challenge that this "modern martyrology" brings. The stories of faithfulness, suffering, and death demand a response from the reader.
