Acknowledges receipt of Knox's last letter, which informed him that he was appointed Collector at Savannah. Thanks Knox for the favorable manner in which, I am informed, you spoke of me to the President of the United States. Will always testify to his own esteem and respect for Knox.

Writes that he will attend the President at nine, and that the message respecting the troops should be accompanied by a statement which shall be prepared and submitted to the president so that it may be communicated to the house any time after to day.

Would be happy to help Mr. Hays if he had the power to do so. However, it appears that Mr. Hays's not being a current resident of Rhode Island is a formidable barrier in securing him the appointment. Regardless of this problem, if he would like to submit a letter to the President about the position, Knox will present it to him.

Writes that he has not composed a letter to Knox for awhile in order not to interrupt the business of his office, and also, in order not to be a burden. Discusses his poor financial prospects and wishes for a government appointment. Asks Knox about his prospects for receiving a position, now and in the future.
