Provides updated information on that land deal, and his attempts to satisfy their creditors. Discusses other business arrangements, including his insistence on their eliminating [William] Duer from their ventures: I am clear with you that Duer must take his name & management out of the business, or he will Damn the most favorable prospects, for I assure you the bare mention of him will distroy every confidence & make us the objects of ridicule. Writes that he received Knox's last letter: I rejoice with you & your family in the prospect of your being so soon well & a perfect cure effected. After reading his letter, showed it to Ben [Hichborn], who declared he has written to Knox about their business. Writes, On Wednesday morning the Bells in this Town were set a Ringing in Honor of the Day - the Birth Day of the New Government, and a [general] joy ran through the whole of the inhabitants of this City - I believe there is not a more Federal Spot in Union. - We are momently expecting an Express from New York, announcing the Election of John Adams, Esq. VP this will being very pleasing to him & perfectly gratifying to all the people in this quarter. Discusses celebrations surrounding Adams's election. Mentions the activities of their friends, and declares that Governor [John] Hancock is still unwell. Adds that the Supreme Court continues to sit, which is preventing Hichborn from leaving town with Jackson to visit Knox in New York. Does not think that he will be able to be with Knox when General [George] Washington arrives in New York, as he had hoped. He and their friends send their love to Knox and his wife. Discusses a problem with William Duer about Duer's inablity to comply with his contract with me. Writes that Duer seems to want things to remain on their former footing. Mentions that Duer raised [Dollar sign]12,500 dollars and still promises [Dollar sign]25,000 for Jackson to arrive at a later date. Suggests Kingston, New Jersey as a meeting place noting that to see you at Princetown, Trenton or Brunswick they are very publick places & would cause some speculation that two such great men should have a conference, and its [sic] possible we may be newspaper'd & an alarm go forth that the Government was in danger - Wants to discuss with Knox the situation regarding their land deals and with William Duer.
