She requires them to be removed so that she can begin making her settlement in the town. Discusses the steps he has taken to accomplish this goal, and his subsequent disputes with Madame de Leval. Suggests that the French, like Madame de Leval, might want to move there due to the political unrest in France. Comments on other business dealings.

Asks Knox about his upcoming visit to New York. Discusses his poor financial situation, particularly that he is having difficulty paying off debts. Updates Knox on their joint business ventures. Mentions their project to have Madame de Leval organize a French settlement in some of their lands in Maine. Writes, Madame Laval sail'd on Friday for Frenchmans Bay. She appeared very much displeased with the general management of the business, and at one time was on the point of returning to New York... she kept constantly in view her fears with respect to our obtaining a Title of the lands from the government, and her mind would never be easy until we had made the first payment. Also discusses a sum of money loaned to Madame Leval (he spells it Laval) by Colonel [Benjamin] Walker, and mentions the involvement of Colonel [William] Duer. Comments on the purchase of townships in Maine, in and around the Waldo patent lands.

Complains that Knox has not written to him by the most recent post. Declares that they will be able to purchase certain townships in the Waldo patent lands, and describes how he is negotiating the price. Touches on Indian claims to the land. Discusses his plans to have an agent purchase the land on their behalf, and explains how their application will be handled by the Committee and the Court.

Wrote to Duer a week ago asking him to see Henry Jackson in New York City regarding their project to purchase lands in Maine. Stresses the importance of their making a decision on the lands, as their financial situation is dire. Will not personally be able to get to New York, so again asks that he speak to Henry Jackson on the subject.

Remarks that he will do whatever possible to protect Jackson, You may rely my dear sir that I shall exert my upmost not only to prevent you being injured, but great to benefit you.
