For more than a quarter of a century, Hubert L. Dreyfus has been the leading voice inAmerican philosophy for the continuing relevance of phenomenology, particularly as developed byEdmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Dreyfus has influenced a generation ofstudents and a wide range of colleagues, and these volumes are an excellent representation of theextent and depth of that influence. In keeping with Dreyfus's openness to others' ideas, many of theessays in this volume take the form of arguments with various of his positions. The essays focus onthe dialogue with the continental philosophical tradition, in particular the work of Heidegger, thathas played a foundational role in Dreyfus's thinking. The sections are Philosophy and Authenticity;Modernity, Self, and the World; and Heideggerian Encounters. The book concludes with Dreyfus'sresponses to the essays.Contributors : William D. "Writing in a lively and refreshingly clear American English, Zimmerman provides an uncompromisingly honest and judicious account... of Heidegger's views on technology and his involvement with National Socialism.... One of the most important books on Heidegger in recent years." -- John D. Caputo "... superb... " -- Thomas Sheehan, The New York Review of Books "... thorough and complex... " -- Choice "... excellent guide to Heidegger as eco-philosopher." -- Radical Philosophy "... engrossing, rich in substance... makes clear Heidegger's importance for the issue of technology, ethics, and politics." -- Religious Studies Review The relation between Martin Heidegger's understanding of technology and his affiliation with and conception of National Socialism is the leading idea of this fascinating and revealing book. Zimmerman shows that the key to the relation between Heidegger's philosophy and his politics was his concern with the nature of working and production.

This edited volume offers a new approach to understanding social conventions by way of Martin Heidegger. It connects the philosopher's conceptions of the anyone, everydayness, and authenticity with an analysis and critique of social normativity. Heidegger’s account of the anyone is ambiguous. Some see it as a good description of human sociality, others think of it as an important critique of modern mass society. This volume seeks to understand this ambiguity as reflecting the tension between the constitutive function of conventions for human action and the critical aspects of conformism. It argues that Heidegger’s anyone should neither be reduced to its pejorative nor its constitutive dimension. Rather, the concept could show how power and norms function. This volume would be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy and the social sciences who wish to investigate the social applications of the works of Martin Heidegger.

This book examines the question of death in the light of Heidegger's paradigmatic discussion in Being and Time. Although Heidegger's own treatment deliberately refrains from engaging theological perspectives, George Pattison suggests that these not only serve to bring out problematic elements in his own approach but also point to the larger human or anthropological issues in play. Pattison reveals where and how Heidegger and theology part ways but also how Heidegger can helpfully challenge theology to rethink one of its own fundamental questions: human beings' relation to their death and the meaning of death in their religious lives.

Heidegger is perhaps the most influential, yet least readily understood, philosopher of the last century. Mark A. Wrathall unpacks Heidegger's dense prose and guides the reader through Heidegger's early concern with the nature of human existence and his later preoccupation with the threat that technology poses to our ability to live worthwhile lives. Wrathall pays particular attention to Heidegger's revolutionary analysis of human existence as inextricably shaped by a shared world. This leads to an exploration of his views on the banality of public life and the possibility of authentic anticipation of death as a response to that banality. Wrathall reviews Heidegger's scandalous involvement with National Socialism, situating it in the context of his views about the movement of world history. He also explains Heidegger's important accounts of truth, art and language. Extracts are taken from Heidegger's magnum opus, Being and Time, as well as a variety of his best-known essays and lectures.
