Ringer The Hard Hat Cat Summary.Ringer the Cat is Bill Putlog's best friend and together they do tricky and sometimes difficult building jobs around the village. Bill Putlog is lucky to live in an old English farmhouse and Ringer lives close by in the wooden barn where they keep their ladders and tools. Ringer likes climbing ropes and helping Bill. But his cleverest trick is ringing bells. He wakes Bill every morning by swinging on a rope to ring a bell high above Bill's bedroom window. Bill is a sleepy head and is happy that Ringer wakes him up each day. It's summer time and a busy time for Ringer and Bill. They load up their little red truck and off they go on their risky adventures. Ringer tries to keep Bill safe in their dangerous work high up on the scaffolding and rickety ladders. Ringer has already lost 2 of his 9 lives but his friend Bill Putlog only has one life to lose. And Bill is a bit careless.Ringer loves it when he can go to work with his friend. Bill loves Ringer too, and takes his friend the Cat with him on all his jobs. High above the ground things begin to look decidedly dodgy when Bill still does'nt seem to take care.Ringer is a clever cat and uses cat signals to warn Bill of any danger. But does Bill pay attention? Ringer has to keep Bill safe but how will he do it?

Readin' + Writin' for the Hard-Hat Crowd explores the history of an urban public university from its conception in 1964 to the dawn of the twenty-first century. The reader views this place in time through the lens of the evolving nature of «freshman English», an introductory curriculum that began as four semesters of Great Books. The author, herself among those once labeled «the hard-hat crowd», received an undergraduate education similar to that experienced by her contemporaries at elite private colleges. Yet, while this school, once considered a poor man's Harvard, was founded with a mission to provide academic equity, the curriculum evolved to one that responded to pressure for relevancy and practicality.
