A project panel was established to provide guidelines for the rehabilitation of concrete pavements in Colorado. Techniques used by other state highway agencies were compared to the type and severity of concrete pavement distress observed in-state. Representatives from the concrete and asphalt pavement paving organizations were also invited to provide input to the study. A major field study and evaluation has been conducted into the effectiveness of three structural overlay types for portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. These include sawing and sealing asphalt concrete (AC) overlays of PCC pavements, cracking and seating PCC pavements prior to AC overlay, and constructing a thin bonded PCC overlay on top of the existing PCC pavement. Condition surveys, deflection testing, and roughness measurements were performed on a total of 55 sections. The performance of these sections was evaluated and the effectiveness of each overlay type analyzed.
