For more than half a century, a shared love of canals and narrowboats has been inseparable from the marriage of Timothy West and Prunella Scales. The two iconic actors have spent many of the happiest days of their life together enjoying the calming pleasures of watching land and nature unfold before them at four miles an hour. In 2014, Tim and Pru took to the canals of Britain and beyond with a television crew and a brief to record their best-loved trips along the most beautiful waterways they could find. Not only does OUR GREAT CANAL JOURNEYS recount their careers and travels, but it also explores the trials - and the joys - of ageing, and how Prunella's struggle with dementia has both changed, and yet failed to change, their lives together.

Today there are more craft on our canals than even during their industrial heyday. Thanks to the pleasures of boating, our canals are vibrant and thriving once again. Yet this would have astounded the people who built them and lived hard lives to keep the boats and their cargo moving. In Barging Round BritainJohn Sergeant sets out both to explore eight of the best trips among our more than three thousand miles of canals and to tell the fascinating story of their origins and workings. Opening up a too-often neglected world right on our doorstep, he seeks out pleasures and sights while stopping to examine the part the canals and their extraordinary builders played in our industrial heritage - from Josiah Wedgwood's need to safely transport his fragile bone china, to engineer James Brindley's visionary solutions to complications of geology and landscape. Exploring the history of British inland navigation through eight of the most celebrated waterways - including the Caledonia, Grand Union and the Trent and Mersey Canals - travelled by John Sergeant in the ITV series Barging Round Britain, this book will delight seasoned boaters and encourage those dreaming of their first canal holiday to dip their toes in the water. It is the book for anyone with a passion for Britain and its waterways. 'There is something very British in the way we cherish the canals. It takes us back to a time when the pace of life was slower. . .'

In early 2009 a strange sort of business plan landed on the desk of a pinstriped bank manager. It had pictures of rats and moles in rowing boats and archaic quotes about Cleopatra's barge. It asked for a £30,000 loan to buy a black-and-cream narrowboat and a small hoard of books. The manager said no. Nevertheless The Book Barge opened six months later and enjoyed the happy patronage of local readers, a growing number of eccentrics and the odd moorhen. Business wasn't always easy, so one May morning owner Sarah Henshaw set off for six months chugging the length and breadth of the country. Books were bartered for food, accommodation, bathroom facilities and cake. During the journey, the barge suffered a flooded engine, went out to sea, got banned from Bristol and, on several occasions, floated away altogether. This account follows the ebbs and flows of Sarah's journey as she sought to make her vision of a floating bookshop a reality.

Little did anyone guess that their seemingly light-hearted travelogue, and the story of their lives that it revealed, would transcend the programme's gentle façade, becoming something entirely more powerful. From the outset, the reflective undertones of the possibilities of later life, and the realities of Prunella's dementia, struck a chord with viewers around the country. Now in its seventh series, the show has been described as 'beautiful and meditative' by the Guardian, 'touching' by the Independent and 'a hymn to the possibilities of later life' by the Telegraph, there is no finer, nor more thought-provoking, travelogue on British television. In this handsomely presented book, Timothy West tells the story of the couple's life and travels. Illustrated throughout with beautiful photography, Our Great Canal Journeys recounts their storied careers as actors while recording their remarkable journeys along some of the world's most scenic waterways. Beyond this, however, it explores with sensitivity the trials, but also the joys, of ageing, and how Prunella's struggle with dementia has both changed, and yet failed to change, their lives together. By turns humorous and poignant, Our Great Canal Journeys is at once a beautifully observed ode to a unique, magical method of travelling the world, and a warm meditation upon love, learning and life.
