The student who has listened to learned lectures on the age and in uence of Chaucer, or has been required to produce a thesis on the Lake poets, with out being taught the fundamental principles in the use of his native tongue, may well say, Give me the means of teaching myself. I know of no volume that will answer his requirement so completely and satisfactorily as this. Here he is so far instructed in the proper use of words and phrases, with caution as to those that should be avoided, that after closing the book he will delightedly continue the study in his leisure moments. Here, also, he is taught how to use books of reference. Comparatively few read ers have the knack of readily uncovering the riches of information that are embodied in such books. Reclaiming the work of a generation of Victorian “intuitionist” philosophers who insisted that true morality consisted in being able to feel or intuit the morally good, Jesse Rosenthal shows that when Victorians discussed the moral dimensions of reading novels, they were also subtly discussing the genre’s formal properties. For most, Victorian moralizing is one of the period’s least attractive and interesting qualities.
