Indicates that the Government of the United States are determined that their administration of Indian Affairs shall be directed with justice and humanity. Refers to Knox's negotiations with the Creeks. Text is obscured due to a large water stain on page two.

Later copy of a letter from Washington to Knox, discussing America's relationship with the the Indians and British involvement in these affairs. Also discusses the Society of the Cincinnati and a construction project involving limestone. Copy made 9 August 1855.

Written from the War Office. Provides an extensive analysis of the United States' relationship with the Creek Nation in the Ohio territories as well as Georgia. Also provides information on other nations, such as the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Cherokee. The Indians were facing threats from white settlers encroaching on their land. Knox warns that the situation was growing critical, Already the Cherokees have taken refuge from the evidence of the frontier people of North Carolina within the limits of the Creeks, Knox wrote. [T]heir remote situation is their only present protection and the time must shortly arrive when their troubles will commence. Bottom half of final page missing, causing loss of the year portion of date.

Later copy. Duplicate of a portion of GLC02437.03220, a letter by Knox. Discusses the troops at Forts Pitt and McIntosh, as well as treaty negotiations with the Indians. Calculations in blue pencil on verso.

Writes to Washington on a variety of subjects. Mentions that he had hoped to visit him at Mount Vernon, but now does not think that is possible. Discusses placement of six companies on the Ohio River, by Forts McIntosh and Pitt; declares that they will have to post them there for the winter. Comments on the negotiations with Indian tribes and the treaties they are trying to create. Also discusses the New York chapter of the Society, referring to the Society of the Cincinnati. Reports that he and his wife send their love to Mrs. Washington.

Apologizes for not being able to visit her due to his job obligations but states that he will as soon as he can. Mentions that something has occured relatively to the southern Indians which would seem to open new sources of difficulty. Discusses the children and future plans. Ends by stating, The President [George Washington] is buried in solitude at Mount Vernon - I write no more to him than is indispensible in order to prevent trouble.
