The Witherspoon family moved from Scotland to Down Co., Ireland in 1695, and in 1734 immigrated to South Carolina (the wife died enroute). John Witherspoon (ca. 1670-1737) died there.

Descendants lived in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere.
