This volume contains editions of sixty-five Greek, Demotic, Coptic and Arabic texts from Egypt, contributed as a token of friendship and respect by forty-six of Klaas Worpa (TM)s colleagues and co-authors upon his retirement from the Papyrological Institute of the University of Leiden in August 2008. The contents are as diverse as Klaas Worpa (TM)s own wide range of interests, and provide a vivid impression of life and culture in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The texts are written on papyrus, potsherds, parchment, paper and wood. They include both literary and documentary papyri and ostraca, and date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD. They are published fully, most for the first time, with transcriptions and translations, and are accompanied by photographs.

During the Graeco-Roman period, the Fayum became one of the most productive agricultural regions of Egypt and was the focus of a systematic settlement and cultivation program. This volume contains the conferences given at the third international symposion for Fayum studies held at Freudenstadt/ Schwarzwald from May 29 to June 1, 2007. Egyptologists, papyrologists and archaeologists from all over the world joined in order to report their current research and to contribute with their special point of view in enhancing and completing our picture of the Fayum in the Graeco-Roman period. This volume provides a synthetic study of the political, social, and economic processes which formed early Islamic Egypt. Looking at a corpus of previously unknown Arabic papyrus letters, Sijpesteijn examines the reasons for the success of the early Arab conquests and the transition from the pre-Islamic Byzantine system to an Arab/Muslim state.

In Three Hundred Years of Death: The Egyptian Funerary Industry in the Ptolemaic Period, Maria Cannata provides a detailed survey of the organisation of the necropolises and the funerary workers, as well as their role in the practical aspects of the mummification, funeral, burial, and mortuary cult of the deceased, in Ptolemaic Egypt (332-30 BC). The author gathers together and synthesises hundreds of the original textual sources, as well as the relevant archaeological sources, on the organisation of the funerary industry and its practitioners, revealing important regional and chronological variations overlooked in studies focusing on a limited geographical area, a shorter timeframe, or a smaller group of documents.
