At a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals-often referred to under the umbrella acronym LGBT-are becoming more visible in society and more socially acknowledged, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about their health status. While LGBT populations often are combined as a single entity for research and advocacy purposes, each is a distinct population group with its own specific health needs. Furthermore, the experiences of LGBT individuals are not uniform and are shaped by factors of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical location, and age, any of which can have an effect on health-related concerns and needs. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences. To advance understanding of the health needs of all LGBT individuals, the report finds that researchers need more data about the demographics of these populations, improved methods for collecting and analyzing data, and an increased participation of sexual and gender minorities in research. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People is a valuable resource for policymakers, federal agencies including the National Institute of Health (NIH), LGBT advocacy groups, clinicians, and service providers.

This book examines the working lives, retirement plans, and old age experiences of three generations of gay men born 1924–86. It draws on data collected from interviews with 82 men in Australia, England, New Zealand, and USA. The first half of the book concentrates on the men’s working lives, while the second half of the book explores the interviewees’ concerns about old age and retirement. The author analyses the men’s contrasting stories, highlighting key generational differences in their experience of being ‘out’ in the workplace and the dominant work narratives which emerge in each age group. This important work will have cross-disciplinary appeal to scholars of sociology, gerontology, health sciences, gender, queer, and gay and lesbian studies, as well as practitioners.

This comprehensive research-based book is a next-generation study of intimate relationships that explores implications for health and well-being across cultures, genders, and traditional as well as non-traditional relationships. This book fills the need for a contemporary analysis of intimate relationships and their implications for people's health, well-being, and quality of life. It covers topics not ordinarily included in textbooks on this topic, in non-traditional areas such as LGBT relationships. The text also addresses intervention strategies for relationship problems and offers tools and techniques for assessing intimate relationships. Chapters are organized to present information about the origin, formation, development, enrichment, and maintenance of intimate relationships in a way that allows readers to build upon what they have learned. The text provides integrated and evidence-based information on almost all aspects of intimate relationships and will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty in family studies, psychology, and other social sciences. Moreover, counselors, clinicians, and therapists working on conflict, violence, abuse, maladjustment, depression, deterioration, dissolution, reconstruction, and enrichment of marital and non-marital intimate relationships will find this text valuable for their practice.

This volume fills a unique gap. Gerontologists seldom focus on special concerns of gay and lesbian older adults, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender aging organizations rarely address issues of aging, and the mental health field has demonstrated an ability to marginalize both aging and homosexuality. This book lays out the state of knowledge with respect to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender aging—physical health, sexuality, family ties, victimization, and legal and financial concerns. The references at the end of individual chapters and the bibliographical material at the end of the book provide an invaluable resource. For any gerontologist intrigued by the interplay of historical changes and individual aging, it is difficult to imagine a more powerful example than Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Aging. Evolution of attitudes toward homosexuality, the emergence of HIV/AIDS, and legal protections beginning to be afforded to same-sex relationships are all part of the changing world that has shaped and been shaped by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals who are now old.
