This focused case study analyses the roots of super-diversity in a place where immigration is an emerging phenomenon, Northwestern Spain (Galicia). It is characterized by a mostly rural population, an aging demographic, and a historically depressed economy. Yet the region has recently experienced a significant increase in immigration - a reversal of the region’s historically pronounced trend of emigration. To understand immigration in its early stages, this book takes a historical approach that focuses on diversities that go beyond nationality. It explores local yet international phenomena such as different patterns of return migration, transnational community and familial relationships, and niche labour markets. The book takes a broad interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on sociology, anthropology, history, sociolinguistics, literature, and education, to provide a detailed case study analysis. While the case is specific, many other geographic regions will share some of the factors the book explores. Understanding how these factors interact will provide a useful point of contrast for analysing them in a range of other international contexts.

Beyond Sentidiño: New Diasporic Reflections on Galician Culture is an interdisciplinary study of Galician literature, languages, and cultures. The volume brings together essays from fields across the humanities and social sciences to foster a discussion that incorporates new concepts that, as of now, are not part of the imaginary of Galiza: gentrification, language imperialism, youth unemployment, deruralization and deindustrialization, media control, technocapitalism, and gender and sexual normativity. It also serves to moderate a conversation about how independence from the political, material, and sociocultural networks of autonomic Galiza allows diasporic scholars to think of Galician culture in a de-essentializing manner. During the 20th-century, Spaniards and African-Americans shared significant cultural memories forged by the profound impact that various artistic and historical events had on each other. Addressing three crucial periods (the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz Age, the Spanish Civil War, and Franco's dictatorship), this collection of essays explores the transnational bond and the intercultural exchanges between these two communities, using race as a fundamental critical category. Migration has become a structural part of the globalized society in which we live and, as such, it is essential to determine the causes and effects it produces in the involved social groups. Sociolinguistics has a very important role to play in this respect, insofar as its object of study focuses precisely on the analysis of the interrelationships between the linguistic and the social dimensions. This volume presents a series of proposals that involve theoretical approaches, models, and applications related to the process of sociolinguistic integration in contact situations arising from migration. The volume includes studies of general interest which present models and theoretical foundations for the analysis of this process of integration, as well as others which focus on other more specific aspects, such as how migration influences the construction of individual identity, emotional and affective factors in the preservation of the heritage language, and the processes of interlingual convergence that take place in situations of migratory contact.
