As much as ever, strong transatlantic relations matter. Cooperation between Europe and the United States is vital not only to manage day-to-day business and economic and security crises, but also to build a new global order to augment the increasingly fragile and ineffective structures built after World War II. Central to that strong transatlantic bond is the relationship between Germany and the United States. These two countries have been steadfast allies for 60 years, but their bilateral ties would benefit from a reassessment of what binds them and why continued strong cooperation benefits both sides. The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) assembled an interdisciplinary group of experts and stakeholders for a weekend in Germany to reassess the fundamentals of the German-American relationship and make recommendations to renew and strengthen bilateral ties.

This book examines external perceptions of the Franco-German relationship, both from a historical perspective and as a driving force for regional integration. By providing various country and regional studies, it analyses the various types of perception and self-perception in several regions around the globe. Here, Franco-German cooperation serves as a mirror in which third-party countries view their own situation, today and in the future. The contributions address the questions of if and how the Franco-German reconciliation and cooperation is perceived as a role model for other regions, especially for the reconciliation of other inter-state and international conflicts. The Future of Multilateralism addresses current challenges and future perspectives of international and regional organizations. It aims to uncover how stable the foundations of global cooperation really are, particularly in the light of the latest unilateral and protectionist practices of international players and challenges related to COVID-19. The post–World War II global order was built on the foundations of multilateral cooperation. The establishment of international institutions is aimed at avoiding another widespread collision like the two World Wars and to ensure peace and prosperity. Hence, the multilateral system was viewed as an effective mechanism in dealing and resolving various challenges at an international or a regional level. Given the effects of COVID-19 on the global, regional, state, and individual levels are so recent, very little research has been conducted to understand the challenges many multilateral institutions are facing due to the pandemic. This book uncovers the future of such organizations and prospects for the multilateral system, of which they constitute the building blocks, in view of recent trends and developments.
