This book presents a kaleidoscopic view of the multidisciplinary field of research developed within Brazilian social sciences to study football as a major cultural and social phenomenon in the country. As a contributed volume, it brings together chapters authored by researchers from different disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, political science, history, geography, economy, communication studies and physical education, who contributed to make Brazilian football a multifaceted object of study for the human and social sciences. The book is divided in four parts. The first two parts are dedicated to the "classic" areas, in which the best known research lines are concentrated: part one focuses on politics and history, while part two is dedicated to sociology and anthropology. The third part brings together studies from other four different areas: communication studies, geography, economy and physical education. The fourth part is organized not by disciplines, but around transversal themes, such as gender, violence, fans and racism. The varied approaches and different interpretations brought together in this book seek to provide an overview of the fertile academic debate that has stimulated the renewal of scientific research on football in Brazil, which makes Football and Social Sciences in Brazil a useful resource for researchers from different disciplines within the human and social sciences interested in the study of football as major cultural and social phenomenon all over the world.

South America is a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world’s greatest writers and most celebrated footballers. This is the first book to undertake a systematic study of the relationship between football and literature across South America. Beginning with the first football poem published in 1899, it surveys a range of texts that address key issues in the region’s social and political history. Drawing on a substantial corpus of short stories, novels and poems, each chapter considers the shifting relationship between football and literature in South America across more than a century of writing. The way in which authors combine football and literature to challenge the dominant narratives of their time suggests that this sport can be seen as a recurring theme through which matters of identity, nationhood, race, gender, violence, politics and aesthetics are played out. Como un fiel retrato de los pueblos que lo han adoptado, el fútbol ha sido testigo tanto de barbaridades sociales cuanto de episodios de éxtasis colectivo, ha sufrido y ha provocado injusticias, repartido placer y fascinación con la misma desenvoltura con la que se ha generado grandes traumas y pequeñas lacras, pero, eso sí, ha estado siempre presente. No es en balde que esa forma original y hábil de competir en grupo realzando las individualidades, es la única actividad humana de la que se tiene conocimiento, seguida por la nada insignificante cantidad de cuatro mil millones de personas, todos los fines de semana, a todas horas y en cualquier lugar. Con todo ello, es la gran dehesa contemporánea, en la que todavía es posible decidir libremente complacerse o no, que en raras ocasiones excluirá aquellos que decidan incorporarse a el para practicar, admirar o sufrir. Sí, porque el fútbol es, ante todo, tierra de incertidumbres y de padecimientos – que siempre ofrece su cara más atractiva, renovadora, revitalizadora. Y por la que siempre se tendrá que estar dispuesto a padecer. En 150 años, el deporte que nace en el corazón de la Inglaterra de la Revolución Industrial pasó por innumerables periodos de transformación y de adecuación a las diversas culturas. Se fue moldeando a la diversidad de idiosincrasias de las sociedades a las que se fue incorporando, agregó costumbres locales respondiendo a un prolongado y largo proceso de maduración y, cuando parecía consolidado, acabó sometido a las leyes del mercado y sumergió en una nueva aventura revolucionaria, pautada por la tecnología, por la velocidad de transmisión de la información y por la globalización. No obstante, nunca perdió su esencia humanista porque, en este juego, por la lúcida percepción y la sabiduría del escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano, “donde menos se espera salta lo imposible, el enano propina una lección al gigante y un negro esmirriado y chueco deja bobo al atleta esculpido en Grecia”.

This work explores the way in which telenovelas (TV serial dramas) give voice to contemporary and historical Argentinian social and political issues. Telenovelas have multiple layers of socio-cultural message -- local as well as global -- and are invariably laden with appealing drama and emotion, and sometimes comedy. The discussion focuses on how telenovelas reflect society's perception of, and adjustment toward, issues of globalisation. They are a means of portraying how individuals and families rationalize and incorporate rapid social and economic changes. The book explores how telenovelas might offer a subversive interpretation of reality; or provide a channel of dialogue with the government's political aims. The author challenges the assumption that they are merely a reflection of historical, political and social circumstance. One of the many telenovela examples addressed in this book is whether the serial Padre Coraje constructs a parallel between the current Kirchner government and that of Juan Peron, fifty years earlier. The serial explores the two leaders' relationship with the Church and implicitly presents President Kirchner as Peron's successor. Explaining telenovelas as cultural texts (they are not soap operas) provides the primary basis for this study, backed by Argentinian newspaper articles and secondary sources on Latin American history, culture and economy, as well as TV and cinema studies. The result is a more profound and nuanced interpretation than hitherto of Argentinian telenovelas. Analysis enables identification of the links between the serials' storylines and contemporary political and social events. These popular culture texts bring new meaning to the Argentinian historical narrative, and for TV viewers puts the processes and effects of economic and social globalisation on a local multi-cultural level perspective.
