I firmly believe that all people are poets; also I think that most poets never write for anyone but themselves. Writing poetry will save a bright mind a fortune, for you will never need a therapist when you write from your heart. The work is highly personal, emotional, and sinks deep into the very essence of the soul of the writer. That being said, I hope that you read and enjoy Fireflies From Orion, this being a selection composed of over fifty years of my writing prose. There are sad poems, happy poems, spiritual writings, emotion-evoking words...as all poetry should be. Fireflies is poetry truly from the heart, not written to appease the strictest school of composition, not please those with whom iambic pentameter is a requirement along with every line to rhyme....you will not find that in Fireflies. You will find raw poetry, prose of both regular and irregular rhythm, words that hopefully will paint pictures and evoke memories in your mind from times long ago, now gone

As early as 2030 the Arctic Ocean could lose essentially all of its ice during the warmest months of the year-a radical transformation that would destroy virtually all of the Arctic ecosystems and disrupt or destroy many northern communities, if not many communities along the coastal areas of Earth. Even now concentrations of Greenhouse gases are rising dramatically - because of mankind's industry as well as human overpopulation leading to the destruction of the cycle of photosynthesis. The human of Earth seems to be leading its own extinction. Has the cycle reached its "critical mass" and now unable to be reversed? Will popular social efforts such as "Going Green" help in any way whatsoever at this point in a global evolutionary crisis? In only a few - perhaps two - generations of the human race might we know the answers to whether the human race will have a planet capable of sustaining life without ever leaving this world.

Being one of millions of the Baby Boomer generation, I not only did my part in overpopulating the world, but also watched the remarkable transition of society and the world in general as my body and mind grew. Holding on to small mysteries and things that I did not want to lose from my life, I essentially have never grown up, and after nearly seventy years have acclimated to the fact I will never - ever - grow up, no matter what older people tell me to do. These are the life stories of a boy growing older while the world of technology emerged. As this transition marched on, this boy saw his world around him transform from a world in which imagination - fantasy - led to intellectual growth, to a new generation possessed with the idea that their lives are dependent on technology. Computers, smart phones, devices - all have taken the place of creativity. Lessons of the Naked Boy are life's simple philosophies that we must remember to keep from becoming victims of our own technology.

How earnest hippies, frightened parents, suffering patients, and other ordinary Americans went to war over marijuana In the last five years, eight states have legalized recreational marijuana. To many, continued progress seems certain. But pot was on a similar trajectory forty years ago, only to encounter a fierce backlash. In Grass Roots, historian Emily Dufton tells the remarkable story of marijuana's crooked path from acceptance to demonization and back again, and of the thousands of grassroots activists who made changing marijuana laws their life's work. During the 1970s, pro-pot campaigners with roots in the counterculture secured the drug's decriminalization in a dozen states. Soon, though, concerned parents began to mobilize; finding a champion in Nancy Reagan, they transformed pot into a national scourge and helped to pave the way for an aggressive war on drugs. Chastened marijuana advocates retooled their message, promoting pot as a medical necessity and eventually declaring legalization a matter of racial justice. For the moment, these activists are succeeding -- but marijuana's history suggests how swiftly another counterrevolution could unfold.

A philosopher and a scientist propose that sustainability can be understood as living well together without diminishing opportunity to live well in the future. Most people acknowledge the profound importance of sustainability, but few can define it. We are ethically bound to live sustainably for the sake of future generations, but what does that mean? In this book Randall Curren, a philosopher, and Ellen Metzger, a scientist, clarify normative aspects of sustainability. Combining their perspectives, they propose that sustainability can be understood as the art of living well together without diminishing opportunity to live well in the future. Curren and Metzger lay out the nature and value of sustainability, survey the problems, catalog the obstacles, and identify the kind of efforts needed to overcome them. They formulate an ethic of sustainability with lessons for government, organizations, and individuals, and illustrate key ideas with three case studies. Curren and Metzger put intergenerational justice at the heart of sustainability; discuss the need for fair (as opposed to coercive) terms of cooperation to create norms, institutions, and practices conducive to sustainability; formulate a framework for a fundamental ethic of sustainability derived from core components of common morality; and emphasize the importance of sustainability education. The three illustrative case studies focus on the management of energy, water, and food systems, examining the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Australia's National Water Management System, and patterns of food production in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia.
