On an epic 3,000-mile journey through the most pristine backcountry of the American West, four friends rode horseback across an almost contiguous stretch of unspoiled public lands, border to border, from Mexico to Canada. For their trail horses, they adopted wild mustangs from the US Bureau of Land Management that were perfectly adapted to the rocky terrain and harsh conditions of desert and mountain travel. A meticulously planned but sometimes unpredictable route brought them face to face with snowpack, downpours, and wildfire; unrelenting heat, raging rivers, and sheer cliffs; jumping cactus, rattlesnakes, and charging bull moose; sickness, injury, and death. But they also experienced a special camaraderie with each other and with the mustangs. Through it all, they had a constant traveling companion—a cameraman, shooting for the documentary film Unbranded. The trip’s inspiration and architect, Ben Masters, is joined here by the three other riders, Ben Thamer, Thomas Glover, and Jonny Fitzsimons; two memorable teachers and horse trainers; and the film’s producers and intrepid cameramen in the telling of this improbable story of adventure and self-discovery.

Forget everything you think you know about Nature. Fahim Amir’s award-winning book takes pure delight in posing unexpected questions: Are animals victims of human domination, or heroes of resistance? Is Nature pristine and defenceless, or sentient and devious? Is being human really a prerequisite for being political? In a world where birds on Viagra punch above their weight and termites hijack the heating systems of major cities, animals can be recast as vigilantes, agitators, and public enemies in their own right. Under Amir’s magic spell, pigs transform from slaughterhouse innocents into rioting revolutionaries, pigeons from urban pests into unruly militants, honeybees from virtuous fuzzballs into shameless centrefold models for eco-capitalism. As paws, cLaws, talons, and hooves seize the means of production, Being and Swine spirals higher and higher into a heady thesis that becomes more convincing by the minute. At the heart of Amir’s writing is a deep optimism and bracingly fresh reading of Marxist, post-colonial, and feminist theory, building upon the radical scholarship of Donna J. Haraway and others. Contrarian, whip-smart, and wildly innovative, no other book will laugh at your convictions quite like this one.

To some extent, the title Fin Feather and Field is self-explanatory. Fin is more than fishing; it is an excuse to be outdoors, not just to kill but to observe nature from diverse angles. Feather is not just game-bird shooting but watching and identifying birds, rearing semi-tame peacocks and gray partridges till ready to fly, named Mustapha, Mr. Onion, and Paloma. Field involves travel, monuments and wild life sanctuaries, tracking Tahr in the Nilgiris and Bharal in snowbound North Sikkim. It is horse riding, playing golf, trekking, and mountain climbing. It is savoring a myriad cultures across India and some abroad; inviting misadventure are part of Field. Autobiographical glimpses and vignettes of army lifestyle find small nooks here and there. In short, Fin Feather and Field is a celebration of the life given and enjoyed to the hilt through over forty years, with minds open to wonder, learning, never abandoning the mindfulness of "feeling" the aura of strangers and places. Some of the best years lived in tribal India on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, braving dacoits and fearful gun-wielding Naxalites, are memorable parts of Field.
