Jurgen Herbst traces the debates, discussions, pronouncements and reports through which Americans have sought to clarify their conceptions of the goals and purposes of education beyond the common school. The Once and Future School argues that to make sense of the current trials of secondary educational system and to maintain any sense of direction and vision for its future, we need a clear understanding of its path in the past and of its setting in a multi-national world. From their beginnings in colonial America to the present day, Jurgen Herbst traces the debates, discussions, pronouncements and reports through which Americans have sought to hammer out and clarify their conceptions of the goals and purposes of education beyond the common school.

This book examines the history of 20th century racial segregation in Kentucky higher education, the last state in the South to enact legislation banning interracial education in private schools and the first to remove it. In five chapters and an epilogue, the book traces the growth of racism, the period of acceptance of racism, the black community's efforts for reform, the stresses of "separate and unequal," and the unrelenting pressure to desegregate Kentucky schools. Different tactics, ranging from community and religious organization support to legislative and legal measures, that were used for specific campaigns are described in detail. The final chapters of the book describe the struggles of college presidents faced with student turmoil, persistent societal resistance from whites (both locally and legislatively), and changing expectations, after the 1954 Supreme Court decision in "Brown V. Board of Education" broadened desegregation to all public schools and the responsibility for desegregation shifted from politically driven state legislators or governors to college governing boards. Appendices contain tabular data on demographics, state appropriations, and admissions to public and private colleges and universities in Kentucky. (Contains approximately 550 notes and bibliographic references.) (Bf).

Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Education: A Sketch of the Progress of Education in the United States In The year 1867 Edwin Ginn took desk room in a modest Boston office and so began the business which has for many years been conducted under the firm name of Ginn and Company. When an individual or an organization reaches the half-century mark it seems fitting to signalize in some appropriate way that achievement. Casting about for a suitable anniversary memento of our own fifty years. we were struck by the remarkable growth and development of the school system of the United States during this period. It finally seemed to us that we could do no better than invite Dr. Ernest C. Moore to sum up the educational progress of the United States since 1867. We are sure that Dr. Moore's admirable sketch of the history of education in this country for the period beginning in 1867 and ending in 1917 will be a welcome and useful contribution to our educational literature and we bring it before the public with gratitude that our own business development has been contemporaneous with this marvelous change in our American schools.
