From the acclaimed author of Corpse Suzette, a plus-sized PI must protect an actress from a killer intent on an encore performance. There’s nothing like a makeover story to get people hooked, and America is certainly addicted to the weight-loss saga of once celebrated actress Dona Papalardo. Plus-sized PI Savannah Reid is no exception, although she can’t imagine wanting to shed her own hourglass figure by undergoing gastric bypass surgery like Dona did. After Dona’s personal assistant is shot dead in the star’s mile-long driveway, Savannah becomes her bodyguard. The victim was wearing one of Dona’s fur coats, indicating that Dona was the target. And when Dona’s hunky gardener takes a bullet between the eyes, Savannah knows she must act quickly to find the killer. Knocking around Dona’s palatial estate gives Savannah plenty of opportunity to hobnob with A-list celebrities and compile a list of suspects that proves some people can never be too rich, too thin, or too vindictive. But just when Savannah’s sure she’s had her fill of the macabre, the shooter strikes again, and this time Savannah is nearly caught in the crossfire. Now, Savannah’s determined to find the truth. After all, it’s hard to enjoy fifteen minutes of fame—or a double chocolate brownie—from six feet under . . . Praise for Fat Free and Fatal “Enjoyable . . . McKevett’s critique of the cult of thinness . . . this light read some heft.” —Publishers Weekly

Kate Jasper, Marin County, California’s own organically grown amateur sleuth, returns in this fourth mystery in the series. Kate and her new sweetie have finally moved in together in Fat-Free and Fatal. But her sweetie’s venomous mother has moved in, too, and she is working hard at destroying the relationship. Kate signs up for a vegetarian cooking class to get out of the house and out from under the prongs of her almost mother‐in‐law’s tongue. Only it is a case of out‐of‐the‐frying‐pan‐into‐the‐fire when the owner of the class’s venue, the Good Thyme Cafe, is found dead . . . strangled by the electric cord of a SaladShooter. The police suspect Kate’s best friend, Barbara. Kate sleuths, fearing that otherwise, her friend’s fowl‐free goose may be cooked.

Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.
