Fanciful creatures slither, swim, and soar through this full-color adaptation of a rare 19th-century German portfolio. The colorful images include exotic birds and fishes, dramatic reptiles and amphibians, and scores of ferocious dragons. This new layout of a hard-to-find antique volume presents enlargements of the original illustrations that offer magnified details of stylized feathers, fins, scales, and other fantastic features. The tremendous variety of these images makes this volume a perfect resource for all manner of graphics and art reference. This meticulously reproduced collection of fanciful creatures represents the first republication of Anton Seder's bestiary since the original 1896 edition. The Munich-based painter is best known for Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The Plant in Art and Trade), which incorporated plants into decorative patterns, and Das Thier in Der Decorativen Kunst (Animals in Decorative Art), which similarly integrated animals and mythical dragons into ornamental motifs. Designers, artists, and crafters will appreciate Seder's imaginative works and their distinctive combination of outstanding designs with keen observations of nature.

By creating hybrid zones of autonomy, the 'fantastic' - a subgenre of literary works - provides alternatives to conventional understandings of the world, knowledge, or identity. The fantastic raises a number of significant questions about cultural and social developments, and challenges existing boundaries. With regard to fantastic fiction in literature and different media representations, the articles in this volume explore: crossings into other worlds, time travel, metamorphoses, hybrid creatures, and a variety of other transitions and transgressions. The book analyzes hybrid genres, inter-media adaptations, transpositions into new media, as well as various forms of crossover as exemplified in the increasing trend of generation-spanning all-age literature. Humans are animals who fictionalize other animals to asse their "humanness." We are philosophical animals who philosophize about our humanity by projecting images onto a mirror about other animals. Spanning literature, philosophy, and ethics, the thread uniting The Philosophical Animal is the bestiary and how it continues to inform our imaginings. Beginning with an exploration of animals and women in the literary work of Coetzee, famous for his book on the Lives of Animals, Eduardo Mendieta then dives into the genre of bestiaries in order to investigate the relation between humanity and animality. From there he approaches the works of Derrida and Habermas from the standpoint of genetic engineering and animal studies. While we have intensely modified many species genetically, we have not done this to ourselves. Why? Finally, Mendieta deals with the political and ethical implications suggested by this question before ending on an autobiographical note about growing up around so-called animals, and in particular horses.
