Sixteen essays, written by specialists from many fields, grapple with the problem of a popular culture that is not very popular — but is seen by most as vital to the body politic, whether endangered by globalization or capable of politically progressive messages for its audiences. Slippery Pastimes covers a variety of topics: Canadian popular music from rock ’n’ roll to country, hip-hop to pop-Celtic; television; advertising; tourism; sport and even postage stamps! As co-editors, Nicks and Sloniowski have taken an open view of the Canadian Popular, and contributors have approached their topics from a variety of perspectives, including cultural studies, women’s studies, film studies, sociology and communication studies. The essays are accessibly written for undergraduate students and interested general readers.

One hundred and nine works created between the sixteenth and the twentieth century originating from fifty institutions from ten different countries will be presented to the public at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as from 26th October. The exhibition project, organized by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with the support of the Musée d'Orsay, is based on an historical survey of the visual representation of the Sea and seeks to identify the major themes which led to its extensive and recurrent depiction in Western Painting. The exhibition will develop the concept that provides the title to the project in six sections: 'The Age of Myths', 'The Age of Power', 'Sea and Labour', 'Storms and shipwrecks', 'The Ephemeral', and 'The Quest for Infinity'. Van Goyen, Lorrain, Turner, Constable, Friedrich, Courbet, Boudin, Manet, Monet, Signac, Fattori, Sorolla, Klee, De Chirico, Hopper are some of the eighty-nine authors present in the exhibition with works of extraordinary quality. Portuguese painting, through works by Henrique Pousão, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, João Vaz, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Menez, among others, will also contribute to this thorough and sometimes unexpected approach to such a fascinating subject. An exhibition organised by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with the support of Musée d'Orsay.--Gulbenkian website.
