Political nomenclature must also be sought for in divers channels and not until one has essayed to run to earth some apparently self-explanatory phrase does it become apparent how little has been done to catalogue such matters. The interesting sub icot of Geographical N icknames is nowhere else treated at the length it deserves. Contractions and Abbreviations, and Foreign Words and Phrases, may be found appended to any good dictionary; but in no case, it is believed, have these ever been set forth so fully as in the present instance. It will be admitted that there is a distinct advantage in having all these matters grouped under one alphabet.
