This book explores contemporary issues in sexuality and relationship education for young people. Drawing upon rich empirical and ethnographic research undertaken with students and teachers in secondary schools, the author asks how school-based sexuality education can better equip young people to engage with contemporary social, political and cultural sexuality and relationships issues. Creatively working across both theoretical and practical contexts, this accessible work suggests approaches to sexuality and relationships education that can build upon the ways in which young people are developing a sense of identity; the ultimate aim being to help them to meet their emotional, spiritual and relational potential. Challenging established approaches to sexuality education, this thought-provoking book shines a new light on alternative perspectives that can help make sexuality and relationships education more relevant and meaningful for young people in a rapidly changing world. This volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of sexuality and relationship education, as well as practitioners.

This book explores the place of sexuality in a Hungarian vocational school. Building upon ethnographic research using a post-structuralist and intersectional theoretical framework, the author highlights the voices of teachers and students in their everyday environment and gives them the opportunity to speak about themselves and their experiences: in doing so, addressing a significant gap in the market. The author critically discusses key issues concerning schooling and sexuality, addressing such themes as LGBTQ+ youth and teachers, institutional hierarchy, and the role of sexuality in the re/production of social inequalities through education. Through these topics, she sensitively questions what should be expected of schools in preparing their students for the wider world. The intersectional approach employed by the author will appeal to scholars in a wide variety of disciplines, from gender and sexuality studies to the sociology of education and race and ethnicity studies.

From concerns over the bullying of LGBTQ youth and battles over sex education to the regulation of sexual activity and the affirmation of queer youth identity, sexuality saturates the school day. Rather than understand these conflicts as an interruption to the work of education, Jen Gilbert explores how sexuality comes to bear on and to enliven teaching and learning. Gilbert investigates the breakdowns, clashes, and controversies that flare up when sexuality enters spaces of schooling. Education must contain the volatility of sexuality, Gilbert argues, and yet, when education seeks to limit the reach of sexuality, it risks shutting learning down. Gilbert penetrates this paradox by turning to fiction, film, legal case studies, and personal experiences. What, she asks, can we learn about school from a study of sexuality? By examining the strange workings of sexuality in schools, Gilbert draws attention to the explosive but also compelling force of erotic life in teaching and learning. Ultimately, this book illustrates how the most intimate of our experiences can come to shape how we see and act in the world.

Movements such as the Women's March on Washington and #MeToo have created a national dialogue about the sexual harassment of women that is still prevalent in the 21st century in the United States. While there are many factors that play into how girls are socialized to conform to traditional gender roles, school plays a significant part in this process. For instance, every fall, there are news stories about dress code standards for girls and young women in schools throughout the country, with district spokespersons often citing that girls create a "distraction" to the boys in their classes. The problem, therefore, is framed in terms of a higher value placed on the learning of boys than the agency that girls have over their own bodies. This book, which takes an intersectionality approach to the topic, seeks to explore the ways in which girls are sexualized through school practices, beginning as early as pre-school and continuing through all levels of education into their adult lives. The book will examine how schools serve as gendered spaces and genderizing spaces that reinforce societal norms and expectations for girls and young women. Distraction: Girls, School, and Sexuality is suitable for undergraduate and graduate course in women's and gender studies.
