Locating a shared interest in the philosophy of "art for art's sake" in aestheticism and modernismo , this study examines the changing role of art and artist during the turn-of-the-century period, offering a consideration of the multiple dichotomies of art and life, aesthetics and economics, production and consumption, and center and periphery.

Modernismo, a literary movement of fundamental importance to Spanish America and Spain, occurred at the turn of the nineteenth century, roughly from the 1880s to the 1920s. It is widely regarded as the first Spanish-language literary movement that originated in the New World and that became influential in the "Mother Country," Spain. Characterized by the appropriation of French Symbolist aesthetics into Spanish-language literature, modernismo's other significant traits were its cultural cosmopolitanism, its philological concern with language, literary history, and literary technique, and its journalistic penchant for novelty and fashion. Despite the splendor of modernista poetry, modernismo is now understood as a broad movement whose impact was felt just as strongly in the prose genres: the short story, the novel, the essay, and the journalistic cr©đnica [chronicle]. Conceived as an introduction to modernismo as well as an account of the current state of the art of modernismo studies, this book examines the movement's contribution to the various Spanish American literary genres, its main authors [from Mart©Ư and N©Łjera to Dar©Ưo and Rod©đ], its social and historical context, and its continuing relevance to the work of contemporary Spanish American authors such as Gabriel Garc©Ưa M©Łrquez, Sergio Ram©Ưrez, aargas Llosa. This book distinguishes itself from previous scholarship by offering an inclusive and comprehensive treatment of urban walking from 1800 to the present. Divided into three sections—geography, genius, and gender—the introduction establishes the origins of the flâneur and flâneuse in early foundational texts and explores later works that reimagine flânerie in terms of these same three themes. The volume’s contributors provide new and global perspectives on urban walking practices through their treatment of a variety of genres (literature, film, journalism, autobiography, epistolary correspondence, photography, fashion, music, digital media) and regions (Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East). This volume theorizes well-known urban characters like the idler, lounger, dandy, badaud, promeneuse, shopper, collector, and detective and also proposes new iterations of the flâneur/flâneuse as fashion model, gaucho, cruiser, musician, vampire, postcolonial activist, video game avatar and gamer.

This book provides a fresh account of modernist writing in a perspective based on the reading strategies developed by postcolonial studies.

Art for art's sake addresses the relationship between art and life. Although it has long been argued that aestheticism aims to de-humanize art, this volume seeks to consider the counterclaim that such de-humanization can also lead to re-humanization and to a deepened relationship between the aesthetic sphere and the world at large.

In Creature Discomfort: Fauna-criticism, Ethics, and the Representation of Animals in Spanish American Fiction and Poetry, Scott M. DeVries uncovers a tradition in Spanish American literature where animal-ethical representations anticipate many of the most pressing concerns from present debates in animal studies. The author documents moments from the corpus that articulate long-standing positions such as a defense of animal rights or advocacy for liberationism, that engage in literary philosophical meditations concerning mind theory and animal sentience, and that anticipate current ideas from Critical Animal Studies including the rejection of hierarchical differentiations between the categories human and nonhuman. Creature Discomfort innovates the notion of “fauna-criticism” as a new literary approach within animal studies; this kind of analysis emphasizes the reframing of literary history to expound animal ethical positions from literary texts, both those that have been considered canonical as well as those that have long been neglected. In this study, DeVries employs fauna-criticism to examine nonhuman sentience, animal interiority, and other ethical issues such as the livestock and pet industries, circuses, zoos, hunting, and species extinction in fictional narrative and poetry from the nineteenth century, modernista, Regional, indigenista, and contemporary periods of Spanish American literature.
