How is history represented? As just a record of the past, as a part of a present identity or as future goals? This book explores how historical contents and narratives are presented in school textbooks and other cultural productions (museums, monuments, etc) and also how they are understood by students, in the context of increasing globalization. In these contemporary conditions, the relation between history learning processes, in and out of school, and the construction of national identities presents an ever more important topic. It is being studied by looking at the appropriation of historical narratives, which are frequently based on the official history of a nation state. Most of the chapters in this volume are educational studies about how the learning of history takes place in school settings of different countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Latin America, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Covering such a broad sample of cultural and national contexts, they provide a rich reflection on history as a subject related to patriotism, cosmopolitanism, both or neither.

In a saturated and complex workd of information, how can students be helped to seek, evaluate and verify information? Over the past two decades, the use of the internet and social media has enabled wider and faster access to information around the world. In doing so, however, it has also opened the door to misinformation, manipulation, fake news and political propaganda. Every industry, institution and individual person has had to adapt to this influx of unreliable information, and many organisations have begun to adopt new policies and issue recommendations on how to manage this new way of life. The publication Toolkit for history classes – Debunking fake news and fostering critical thinking is a co-ordinated response by the European Union and Council of Europe to this phenomenon. The toolkit is a resource for history teachers to help their students learn how to deconstruct and question fake news through historical sources and topics that relate the past to the present. The toolkit aligns with the values and priorities of the European Union and Council of Europe, as both institutions have worked for many years to draw attention to the dangers caused by disinformation and the manipulation of history. The toolkit was designed for teachers to show students not only how to recognise fake news when they see it, but also understand why it was created and become aware of the minority communities who are most often the target of this manipulated information.

"The focus of this book is on the secondary school history curriculum in Chile from colonial times to the present. By way of background, attention is paid to the development of the history curriculum in the three countries which have most influenced educational developments in Chile, namely, England, the United States of America and Spain. The academic literature on the history curriculum throughout the English-speaking and Latin-speaking world, especially on the purposes attached to history as a school subject and the variety of pedagogical approaches prescribed is also considered. The results of a project that addressed the following interrelated research questions are then outlined: • What is the historical background to the current secondary school history curriculum in Chile? • What are the current developments of the secondary school history curriculum in Chile? • What are the issues of concern for secondary school history teachers in Chile? At various times the teaching of the subject ranged from being in the ‘great tradition’ approach, emphasizing teacher-centred activities and repetition of content knowledge, to being in the ‘new history’ tradition, emphasizing the promotion of active learning, student-centred activities and the encouragement of the historical method of enquiry. The analysis also details current issues of concern for teachers regarding the implementation of the current curriculum framework for secondary school history. The book concludes with a consideration of implications for practice in areas pertaining to curriculum development, teaching and learning, management and administration, teacher preparation, and professional development practices in Chile.
