Excerpt from Engineers' Surveying Instruments: Their Construction, Adjustment, and Use An engineer's chain is 100 feet long, each link be ing I foot. This chain is used in surveying railroads, canals, and Where extensive line surveys are being con ducted. It is not infrequently employed in finding areas in acres. It is preferred to the surveyor's chain on account of its greater length, which enables one to work more rapidly and more accurately. When the chain is folded up the links Should not be parallel to each other, but should be crossed in such a manner as to touch each other in the middle, thus pre venting the bending of the links in tying up the chain.
