The importance of quality of service (QoS) has risen with the recent evolution of telecommunication networks, which are characterised by a great heterogeneity. While many applications require a specific level of assurance from the network; communication networks are characterized by different service providers, transmission means and implementer solutions such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), IPv6 and MPLS. Providing comprehensive coverage of QoS issues within heterogeneous network environments, “QoS Over Heterogeneous Networks” looks to find solutions to questions such as does QoS fit within heterogeneous networks and what is the impact on performance if information traverses different network portions that implement specific QoS schemes. Includes: A series of algorithms and protocols to help solve potential QoS problems. State of the art case studies and operative examples to illustrate points made. Information on QoS mapping in terms of service-level specification (SLS) and an in-depth discussion of related issues Chapters end-to-end (E2E) QoS, QoS architecture, QoS over heterogeneous networks and QoS internetworking and mapping. An ideal book for graduate students, researchers and lecturers. System designers, developers and engineers will also find “QoS Over Heterogeneous Networks” a valuable reference.

Considerable attention is currently devoted worldwide toward mobility issues and challenges such as those arising from the integration of the next generation Internet over terrestrial digital TV, mobile user location management, and multi-service mobile networks subject to quality of service (QoS) routing. This book follows Heterogeneous Networks: Performance Modelling and Analysis. It describes recent advances in mobile and wireless networks and the Internet, reflecting the state-of-the-art technology and achievements in the study of mobility management, performance enhancement, optimal admission control, and QoS worldwide. Technical topics discussed in the book include - Mobility Management - Optimal Admission Control - Performance Modelling Studies - Access Network Coverage - Quality of Service (QoS) Mobility Management and Quality-of-Service for Heterogeneous Networks contains recently extended research papers, which have their roots in the series of the HET-NETs International Working Conferences. They focus on the 'Performance Modelling and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Networks' under the auspices of the EU Networks of Excellence Euro-NGI and Euro-FGI. This book is ideal for personnel in computer/communication industries as well as academic staff and master/research students in computer science, operational research, electrical engineering, and telecommunication systems.

A modern communication network can be described as a large, complex, distributed system composed by higher interoperating, smaller sub-systems. Today, the proliferation and convergence of different types of wired, wireless, and mobile networks are crucial for the success of the next generation networking. However, these networks can hardly meet the requirements of future integrated-service networks, and are expected to carry multimedia traffic with various Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Providing all relevant QoS/QoE issues in these heterogeneous networks is then an important challenge for telecommunication operators, manufacturers, and companies. The impressive emergence and the important demand of the rising generation of real-time Multi-service (such as Data, Voice VoD, Video-Conference, etc.) over communication heterogeneous networks, require scalability while considering a continuous QoS. This book presents and explains all the techniques in new generation networks which integrate efficient global control mechanisms in two directions: (1) maintain QoS requirements in order to maximize network resources utilization, and minimize operational costs on all the types of wired-wireless-mobile networks used to transport traffic, and (2) mix the QoS associated with home, access, and core networks in order to provide Quality of Service/Quality of Experience expected by users of new services.

The diverse and changing nature of the service requirements among emerging Internet application calls for network architecture that is both flexible and able to distinguish among the needs of the application. In this thesis a new framework has been proposed which focuses on achieving an End-to-End Quality of Service for video traffic in a heterogeneous network. The core components of the framework are state-of-art H.264 codec, Differentiated network model and IEEE 802.lle protocol. H.264 standard was chosen due to its intrinsic ability to adapt to network delays and its average reduction in bit rate by up to 50% for similar encoders. DiffServ architecture provides mechanism for aggregate traffic and prioritized individual flow, that together can be used to build service with varying delay and loss behavior. The newly introduced IEEE 802.11e being the only protocol to support QoS in wireless was chosen to provide the mobile receivers with higher quality of delivered video. To construct this framework modification to functioning of ingress router is proposed since IP packets were assigned drop probabilities by ETBMS. The source marker marked the packets containing video slices (I,-P, B) and also assigned priorities to the packets. The framework also describes a Video Differentiator present in the access point which identifies and maps the video packets to corresponding IEEE 802.1 le prioritized video service queues. Using simulation, the proposed framework is verified by examining QoS parameters like peak signal to noise ratio, mean square error, end-to-end delay and Video quality metric (VQM). The results obtained from various simulations thus illustrate that the framework achieves its goal of guarantying endlto end QoS in a heterogeneous network.

Heterogeneous wireless networking, which is sometimes referred to as the fourth-generation (4G) wireless, is a new frontier in the future wireless communications technology and there has been a growing interest on this topic among researchers and engineers in both academia and industry. This book will include a set of research and survey articles featuring the recent advances in theory and applications of heterogeneous wireless networking technology for the next generation (e.g., fourth generation) wireless communications systems. With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. Fourth generation (4G) wireless systems are devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously. This book intends to provide a unified view on the state-of-the-art of protocols and architectures for heterogeneous wireless networking. The contributed articles will cover both the theoretical concepts and system-level implementation issues related to design, analysis, and optimization of architectures and protocols for heterogeneous wireless access networks.
