"In what ways do working-class middle-aged people who have learned to lead their lives through the lens of a traditional institutionalized life course deal with unexpected job loss? What are the differences between shipbuilding workers and supermarket employees regarding their working-class identities? Is there a quantitative way of tapping class stratification among second generation emigrants? How do respectable working-class people experience their transition to homelessness? Finally, in what ways do working-class adolescents deal with their transition to adulthood? These are some of the questions this volume tries to answer by examining how working-class identities are constructed within various temporal and spatial contexts. The research material has been collected by means of both quantitative and qualitative research designs implemented in various locations of Greek society in the last 10 years. Given that Greece is the par excellence country of which the inhabitants went through the hardships of 2010 financial crisis, the authors of the volume are trying to explore the impact this crisis has upon the life-chances of working-class people. In particular, through various methodological approaches (ethnographic interviews, life stories, surveys, biographical interviews, participant observation), authors provide provocative insights on the narrative, emotional and temporal determinants of working-class identity formation in the age of capitalist crises. In addition, this research aims to go beyond the theoretical state of the art in exploring class identities, class action and class formation (Bourdieu, Beck, Giddens, Foucault, E. P. Thomson, S. Hall) by adopting fresh and challenging theorizations that built upon the concept of time and emotions. Thus, the conceptual elaboration of the data rests upon up-to-date approaches on social time and on emotions that underline that fact that emotions are embedded in social relations which have temporal nature. One of the main working hypotheses of the book is that one can identify the generative mechanisms of working-class identities within the multitude of the emotions that are triggered as a consequence of "felt injustice". Furthermore, one can understand the tendencies of the society to remain stable or to be transformed during uncertainty periods by examining the temporal peculiarities of specific emotions (resentment, anger, resignation, bereavement, hope)"--

This book extends debates in the field of biographical research, arguing that causal explanations are not at odds with biographical research and that biographical research is in fact a valuable tool for explaining why things in social and personal lives are one way and not another. Bringing reconstructive biographical research into dialogue with critical realism, it explains how and why relational social ontology can become a unique theoretical ground for tapping emergent mechanisms and latent meaning structures. Through an account of the reasons for which reductionist epistemologies, rational action models and covering law explanations are not appropriate for biographical research, the authors develop the philosophical idea of singular causation as a means by which biographical researchers are able to forge causal hypotheses for the occurrence of events and offer guidance on the application of this methodological principle to concrete, empirical examples. As such, this volume will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in biographical research and social research methods.

The overarching aim of this edited volume is to investigate different modes, patterns and determinants of youth political participation in Greece, since the economic crisis, by incorporating a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. The chapters examine different forms of youth political participation, from institutionalized (such as voting, or membership in political parties) to non-institutionalized (such as signing petitions, protesting through demonstrations or occupations, and political consumerism). Moreover, the chapters shed light on diverse aspects of youth political participation, such as the interlinkages between occupational precarity and political behaviour, the spatial portrait of youth political engagement in rural, suburban and urban Greek contexts, the engendered aspects of political involvement, the pivotal role of protest events in youth political socialization and in mobilization in contentious political actions, the different impacts of priming inequality on youth’s political beliefs, depending on different modes of thinking, as well as the key features of youth-related and youth-led (non-state) organisations operating in Greece. The aforementioned aspects are examined at the micro, meso or/and macro level through distinct methodological approaches including panel survey, experimental survey, biographical interviews, in-depth interviews and action organization analysis, carried out in the context of the EURYKA (European Commission) project.

The economic crisis has brought about a watershed in institutional, political, and social relations, reshaping the labour market and the class structure in southern Europe. This book provides a critical comparative assessment of the dynamics of change in the employment field, focusing on Spain, Greece, and Cyprus. The book assesses how the liberalization and deregulation processes and the promotion of market-enhancing reforms progressed in three different national settings, identifying the forces, agents, contexts, and mechanisms shaping the employment and industrial relations systems. The comparative perspective used deciphers the interplay of external and internal dynamics in the restructuring of the labour field in Southern Europe, examining austerity and its contestation in connection with prevailing societal ideologies and class shifts. The first part of the book sets the theoretical and historical context, the second is comprised of three empirical national case studies, and the third discusses comparatively the handling of the crisis, its impact, and its legacy from the standpoint of a decade later. The book presents differences in industrial relations systems, trade union forms, and class composition dynamics, accounting for the development of the crisis and the reshaping of the employment field after one decade of crisis. It will be of value to researchers, academics, professionals, and students working on issues of employment and industrial relations, labour market and labour law, political economy and class structure, as well as those interested in the contemporary society and economy of southern Europe in general, and Spain, Greece, and Cyprus in particular.

This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time.
