Todo el Renacimiento gira obsesivamente en torno a la búsqueda de lo específicamente humano. Una indagación sobre el hombre, su pensamiento, su sentido, su propia materialidad. Por ello el retrato -y no sólo lo que estrictamente se entiende por tal, sino también los cientos de representaciones humanas que figuran en los frescos y en las grandes pinturas religiosas-, ocupa un lugar central en las preocupaciones de sus artistas, orfebres, pintores y escultores .... A través del estudio ya clásico de John Pope-Hennesy podemos descubrir algunas de las claves de lo que fue aquel nuevo humanismo renacentista, un nuevo mundo, una nueva visión.

Francisco de Holanda expone en su tratado, que adopta la forma de una serie de diálogos entre el autor y su amigo Blas de Perea, la importancia del retrato en el contexto de la sociedad estamental del Renacimiento, y se sitúa en el centro de la polémica entre los defensores de un tipo de retrato realista, cuyos principales ejemplos proceden de la pintura flamenca de los siglos XV y XVI, y otro más idealizado, el practicado por los pintores italianos, sobre los cuales Holanda destaca a Tiziano. A lo largo de sus páginas, el autor desgrana las partes fundamentales de las que consta un retrato, y da algunas pistas sobre cómo realizarlo con el mayor éxito posible. De este modo, el texto de Holanda se constituyeen el primer referente teórico sobre la retratística, perfectamente imbricado con las teorías preponderantes en la Europa del siglo XVI en general y en Italia en particular, país al que viajó en varias ocasiones y donde se hizo amigo de Miguel Ángel, protagonista de otra de sus obras, el tratado Da pintura antiga. La presente edición, que utiliza la traducción histórica que acometió el pintor miniaturista portugués Manuel Denis en el año 1563, y que en la actualidad se conserva manuscrita en la Biblioteca de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, ha sido realizada por el reconocido especialista anglosajón John B. Bury, que con este trabajo culmina una trayectoria dedicada particularmente al estudio de Francisco de Holanda.

This exciting and wide-ranging volume examines the construction and dissemination of the image of female power during the Renaissance. Chapters examine the creation, promotion, and display of the image of women in power, and how the artistic and cultural patronage they developed helped them craft a self-image that greatly contributed to strengthening their power, consolidating their political legitimacy, and promoting their authority. Contributors cover diverse models of sixteenth-century female power: from ruling queens, regents, and governors, to consorts of sovereigns and noblewomen outside the court. The women selected were key political figures and patrons of art in England, France, Castile, the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire, and Italian city states. The volume engages with crucial and controversial debates regarding the nature and use of portraiture as well as the changing patterns of how portraits were displayed, building a picture of the principal iconographic solutions and representational strategies that artists used. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, gender studies, women’s studies, and Renaissance studies.

Contributors not only highlight her multiple facets—princess of Portugal, regent of Castile, and the only female Jesuit in history—but also show her as a discerning art patron and collector who pursued an active role of patronage, through which she constructed her own art collection and used it to articulate a visual statement of her lineage, power, and religious convictions. Her role as an art promoter culminated with the foundation of the Descalzas Reales and the works of art she collected and displayed within its walls. The Making of Juana of Austria offers a new perspective on female rule and patronage, exploring the achievements of a crucial figure in the history of art, court, and gender in early modern Europe.
