En una primera parte se expone, a través del análisis de diversos estudios de prestigio, el papel del territorio en los procesos de innovación de las empresas. A continuación se describen los diferentes tipos de entornos innovadores, se analiza en profundidad la cooperación, la capacidad de absorción y otros factores determinantes de la innovación y el proceso que la crea. Por último se ubica esquemáticamente a las empresas españolas en un determinado entorno innovador y, mediante los datos extraídos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística, se exponen los determinantes de las empresas españolas hacia el camino del "Medio Innovador"

Local and regional development is an increasingly global issue. Why has capitalism produced economic growth that so vastly dwarfs the growth record of other economic systems, past and present? Why have living standards in countries from America to Germany to Japan risen exponentially over the past century? William Baumol rejects the conventional view that capitalism benefits society through price competition--that is, products and services become less costly as firms vie for consumers. Where most others have seen this as the driving force behind growth, he sees something different--a compound of systematic innovation activity within the firm, an arms race in which no firm in an innovating industry dares to fall behind the others in new products and processes, and inter-firm collaboration in the creation and use of innovations. While giving price competition due credit, Baumol stresses that large firms use innovation as a prime competitive weapon. However, as he explains it, firms do not wish to risk too much innovation, because it is costly, and can be made obsolete by rival innovation. So firms have split the difference through the sale of technology licenses and participation in technology-sharing compacts that pay huge dividends to the economy as a whole--and thereby made innovation a routine feature of economic life. This process, in Baumol's view, accounts for the unparalleled growth of modern capitalist economies. Self-directed learning seeks to provide students with the greatest possible control over the content of their courses and the methods used to deliver them. This fits with counselling process, where the intention is to increase the client's power and autonomy. This book gives practical examples of ways in which this method has been carried out and considers some of the dilemmas facing both students and trainers. Self-directed Learning in Counsellor Training provides a developmental model of self-directed learning together with exercises and methods of facilitating. It looks at ways of managing entry into this form of learning and demonstrates methods of designing courses which reinforce the principles. There is a discussion of the underlying philosophy, the possible outcomes and examples of ways to self and peer assess.

On a mountainside in sunny Tuscany, in October 1989, 96 people from 23 countries on five continents gathered to learn and teach about the problems of managing contemporary science. The diversity of economic and political systems represented in the group was matched by our occupations, which stretched from science policy practitioners, through research scientists and engineers, through academic observers of science and science policy. It was this diversity, along with the opportunities for infonnal discussion provided by long meals and remote location, that made the conference a special learning experience. Except at lecture time, it was impossible to distinguish the "students" at this event from the "teachers," and even the most senior members of the teaching staff went away with a sense that they had learned more from this group than from many a standard conference on science policy they had attended. The flavor of the conference experience cannot be captured adequately in a proceedings volume, and so we have not tried to create a historical record in this book. Instead, we have attempted to illustrate the core problems the panicipants at the conference shared, discussed, and debated, using both lectures delivered by the fonnal teaching staff and summaries of panel discussions, which extended to other panicipants and therefore increased the range of experiences reponed.

The concept of social innovation offers an alternative perspective on development and territorial transformation, one which foregrounds innovation in social relations.
