This study explores how Spanish American modernista writers incorporated journalistic formalities and industry models through the crónica genre to advance their literary preoccupations. Through a variety of modernista writers, including José Martí, Amado Nervo, Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera and Rubén Darío, Reynolds argues that extra-textual elements – such as temporality, the material formats of the newspaper and book, and editorial influence – animate the modernista movement’s literary ambitions and aesthetic ideology. Thus, instead of being stripped of an esteemed place in the literary sphere due to participation in the market-based newspaper industry, journalism actually brought modernismo closer to the writers’ desired artistic autonomy. Reynolds uncovers an original philosophical and sociological dimension of the literary forms that govern modernista studies, situating literary journalism of the movement within historical, economic and temporal contexts. Furthermore, he demonstrates that journalism of the movement was eventually consecrated in book form, revealing modernista intentionality for their mass-produced, seemingly utilitarian journalistic articles. The Spanish American Crónica Modernista, Temporality, and Material Culture thereby enables a better understanding of how the material textuality of the crónica impacts its interpretation and readership.

This is the first book specifically devoted to the new modernist studies. Bringing together a range of perspectives on the past, present, and future of this vibrant, complicated scholarly enterprise, the collection reconsiders its achievements and challenges as both a mode of inquiry and an institutional formation. In its first section, the volume offers a fresh history of the new modernist studies' origins amid the intellectual configurations of the end of the twentieth century and changing views of the value, ​influence, and scope of modernism. In the second section a dozen leading scholars examine recent trends in modernist scholarship to suggest possible new paths of research, showing how the field continues to engage with other areas of study and how it makes a case for the ongoing meaning of modernist literature and art in the contemporary world.

Mariano Siskind’s groundbreaking debut book redefines the scope of world literature, particularly regarding the place of Latin America in its imaginaries and mappings. Nuevos espíritus contemporáneos continúa el trabajo de investigación trazado en Espíritus contemporáneos. Relaciones literarias luso-españolas entre el Modernismo y la Vanguardia (Renacimiento, 2008), que es, a su vez, heredero directo de otros libros de Antonio Sáez Delgado publicados con anterioridad en España y Portugal. Todos ellos pretenden reconstruir el mapa de las relaciones literarias entre los dos países ibéricos en el tiempo comprendido entre 1890, con la llegada del Simbolismo a Portugal, y 1936, año en que estalla la guerra civil española, con la firme convicción de que es posible leer ese tiempo apasionante como el continuum múltiple y heterogéneo de la modernidad en la Península. Por los ocho textos que constituyen este volumen desfilan los nombres de Fernando Pessoa, Teixeira de Pascoaes o Eugénio de Castro junto a los de César González-Ruano, Enrique Díez-Canedo o Mauricio Bacarisse. Modernos y antimodernos se dan la mano entre sus líneas, y conforman ese magma plural y poliforme construido, en paralelo, por los defensores y detractores del Modernismo y la Vanguardia, entendiendo la Península como un polisistema plural de flujos y reflujos estéticos.
