Drive to Survive: The Art of Wheeling the Rig provides an in-depth examination of fire apparatus vehicle dynamics. This is not your average “driver training” textbook. Fire apparatus operators must understand how a vehicle maneuvers at roadway speed, and more importantly…why does it crash? Just as a doctor cannot heal the human body without a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, an emergency vehicle operator cannot safely drive a fire apparatus without an in-depth knowledge of vehicle dynamics. Drive to Survive goes beyond talking about pump operations, aerial operations, and preventative maintenance; it fills in the gaps between vehicle dynamics and crash causation. After 15 years of training and research, Chris Daly developed a training program combining his fire service and crash reconstruction training experience. This book provides an in-depth knowledge of topics required in the following NFPA standards: --NFPA 1002 “Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications” --NFPA 1451 “Standard for Fire and Emergency Service Vehicle Operations Training Programs” --NFPA 1500 “Standard on Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program” Fire apparatus operators will learn the limits of driving an emergency vehicle and will understand that no matter how long they have been driving or how good they think they are, at some point physics will take over and the vehicle will lose control. We can reduce the number of emergency vehicle crashes throughout the world by addressing key issues and providing emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) instructors with methods to convey these concepts. Concepts you learn in this book relate to more than just driving a fire apparatus. These principles apply to anyone who drives a vehicle, including your family members and loved ones.

Intended to help produce safe, competent California school bus drivers, this document contains instructor's materials for a bus driver education course with eight sequential skill levels, including a final appraisal. The first section contains the curriculum's purpose and objectives, the California standards for a state-certified bus driver instructor, the California standards for a delegated behind-the-wheel trainer, and general guidelines for selection of training sites. In addition, information is provided on vehicle inspection training, brake system inspection training, and undercarriage training. Copies of a driver's inspection report and a driver's performance review also appear. Each of the next eight sections contain materials for one of the following skill levels: (1) basic vehicle familiarization; (2) precision training in vehicle movement and driving fundamentals; (3) transmission control and shifting procedures; (4) general defensive driving techniques; (5) specialized defensive driving techniques; (6) passenger loading and unloading procedures; (7) emergency procedures; and (8) final appraisal. The first seven sections each contain a table of contents, purpose and objectives, a note to the instructor, a glossary of terms, an outline of content to be taught, and a sheet on which the instructor can record the trainee's demonstrated competence at each task covered. The final appraisal section includes the purpose and objectives of the appraisal, advice to instructors on being tough but fair, final appraisal procedures, and a form on which to document the final appraisal. This textbook relies on traffic research, psychology research, and criminological research to examine why some drivers are antisocial drivers and what can be done to persuade them to become prosocial drivers. Chapter 1 examines the problem of antisocial drivers on America's roads. These drivers are reckless, performing high-risk moves that endanger themselves and others. Antisocial driving is linked to the deterioration of social values and driving skills are linked to social skills. Chapter 2 clarifies the meaning of antisocial driving, which includes a myriad of illegal and dangerous driving behaviors, such as driving while under the influence of drugs and tailgating. Chapter 3 identifies the types of individuals who engage in antisocial driving behaviors, while chapter 4 reviews the research findings concerning the relationship between antisocial driving and antisocial behavior
