With the growing scarcity of fish resources, instruments of fisheries management become crucial. This publication suggests a legal approach to this isssue, and focuses on six case studies: Indonesia, Kenya, Namibia, Brazil, Mexico and the EU. The case studies are preceded by an analysis of the international law requirements concerning fisheries management, with a focus on fisheries in Exclusive Economic Zones. The final part of the book summarises the case studies and develops a proposal for a 'legal clinic' for fisheries management.

The environment has always been a great source of raw material for humanity, whether this matter is of plant, animal, or mineral origin. The vast majority of needs are met through factor-factor and factor-product correlations, which indicate in their genesis the nature of economic development. However, numerous scientific works, especially those produced by scholars of the economic sciences, demonstrate that some resources made available by nature are finite, and it should therefore be sought to develop strategic measures so that their use occurs in the most rational way possible. Among these strategies is, since the 1970s, the creation and dissemination of so-called "protected areas", whose main scope is the preservation of the environment for future generations.

This publication describes the use of legal tools and incentives mechanisms for the conservation of private lands in Latin America, and assesses their implementation record. It reviews both mandatory provisions and the use of voluntary instruments such as easements and private reserve designations that have grown in use since the early 1990s. It ends with recommendations for an improved framework for private lands conservation, and presents model laws for the creation of private reserves and conservation easements.

In doing so, it provides a complete overview of the primary international and regional conventions in this area, and the decisions and resolutions that have come from them. In each area, the values, selection considerations, management, and compliance considerations are examined in detail and linked into recognizable examples from well known protected sites of international significance.

Protected natural areas have historically been the primary tool of conservationists to conserve land and wildlife. These parks and reserves are set apart to forever remain in contrast to those places where human activities, technologies, and developments prevail.
